The Middlebury's men's basketball team put together a 12-0 first-half run and a 10-0 second-half spurt during Monday's contest with Plattsburgh State and never looked back, cruising to a 90-60 triumph.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers recorded the initial eight points of the game on three-point field goals by Sam Stevens and Kuba Cwalina followed by a fast-break bucket from Stevens for a quick 8-0 advantage 1:38 into action.
- The Cardinals chipped away at the deficit, pulling within three (10-7) on a driving layup by Franklin Infante with 16:34 remaining.
- The definitive run followed with five different Middlebury players finding the scoring column, capped by two free throws from Oliver Urena for a 22-7 lead with 11:51 left.
- The hosts maintained a double-digit advantage over the remainder of the stanza, as a basket by Sawyer Ramey gave the Panthers a 41-27 edge at the break.
- Plattsburgh State made it a 12-point game (43-31) on a pull-up jumper in the lane from Kevin Tabb with 1:50 expired in the second half.
- Middlebury rattled off the ensuing 10 points over the next 2:09 of play, highlighted by an emphatic dunk from Mark Newell to take a 53-31 lead at the 16:01 mark.
- The Panthers continued to produce at the offensive end of the floor, grabbing a 33-point lead (86-53) on a shot from beyond the arc by Maxwell Alberts and cruised to the 90-60 triumph.
NOTES
- Newell finished with career-high totals in points (8) and rebounds (10) while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor and 2-of-2 at the charity stripe.
- Cwalina tallied a career-best 16 points in his first career start and David Brennan produced a solid all-around game with eight rebounds, four points, four assists, two blocks and a career-high four steals.
- Alberts (5) and Henry Morrison (2) tallied their first collegiate points in the win.
- Middlebury had 12 different players score during the victory, including a team-best 18 from Stevens. He connected on a shot from three-point range for the 50th time in his career.
- The Panthers held a decisive 50-34 advantage on the boards.
- The programs played for the 37th time with Middlebury holding a 23-14 advantage in the series and claiming each of the last five contests.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday when they travel to Endicott for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
