The Middlebury men's basketball team was deadlocked with Endicott early in the second half before an 18-4 run helped propel the Panthers to a 90-78 triumph on the road.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Gulls scored the first five points of the contest and held off Middlebury to take a 13-8 advantage on a layup from Jeff Hill with exactly five minutes gone.
- Middlebury responded, tying the contest twice before taking the lead. Trailing by one (16-15), the Panthers rattled off a 9-3 burst capped by back-to-back baskets from Kuba Cwalina for a 24-19 edge at the 6:24 mark.
- The teams traded four three-pointers and a pair of layups as Middlebury continued to lead by five (32-27) with 4:00 showing on the clock.
- AJ Forte answered for Endicott, sinking four shots from beyond the arc for a 12-1 run over the ensuing 2:09 to give the Gulls a 39-33 advantage.
- A three from Cwalina and a free throw by David Brennan cut the Panther deficit to 39-37 at the break.
- Middlebury came out of the intermission strong, recording a 14-2 run over 5:12 of action for the first double-digit lead (51-41) of the game.
- Endicott sliced the Panther advantage down to six (53-47) at the 12:40 mark on a free throw by Forte.
- Middlebury responded, rattling off an 18-4 run over nearly five minutes, with seven points coming from Edward Witherington, to extend its lead to 70-51.
- The Gulls slowly chipped away, closing the gap to 13 points (76-63) on a three from Drew Brown with just 4:45 remaining.
- Every time Endicott attempted to mount a comeback, the Panthers would match the squad with double the amount of points, rattling off 10 of the next 15 points for an 86-68 advantage at the 2:21 mark.
- The Gulls closed the game with a 10-4 run capped by consecutive three-pointers, but it wasn't enough as Middlebury secured the 90-78 triumph.
NOTES
- Cwalina had a career-high 22 points, while Witherington was second on the squad with 19.
- With 23 boards today, Brennan moved into fifth place on the Panther's career rebounding list with 755.
- Middlebury and Endicott played for the 12th time with the Panthers claiming their 10th win in the series and eighth in a row.
- The program has started three of the last four seasons with five-straight wins.
Middlebury closes out the semester with a three-game week, beginning with a home contest against New England College on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
