Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Second-Half Output Lifts #1 Field Hockey Over #3 Williams

The top-ranked Middlebury field hockey team scored two goals in Tuesday's third quarter and added another in the final stanza for a 3-0 victory over #3 Williams in the regular-season finale.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • During the opening frame, with much of the play in the midfield, Middlebury produced the best opportunity with 1:32 left following a penalty corner. An initial shot inside the circle from Amy Griffin was blocked by a defender. Hanna Medwar collected the loose ball and fired her attempt into the pads of Williams' goalie Ellie Smith.
  • The Panthers controlled the play in their offensive end for a majority of the second stanza. With 3:13 expired, a whistling shot by Griffin following a penalty corner scooted just wide of the right post.
  • Nearly five minutes later, Caroline Segal found space in front of the Eph goal, but her redirected bid off a centering pass sailed just outside the edge of the goal to keep the contest scoreless at the halftime break.
  • The hosts produced the eventual game-winning score with 5:16 remaining in the third quarter. Medwar collected a pass from Griffin, made one touch to her right, and fired a shot into the back of the cage for the 1-0 lead.
  • Middlebury doubled its advantage 2:54 later on a great individual effort from Katherine Lantzy. The Panther dribbled through traffic on the left side before ripping a reverse sweep that snuck between Smith's pads for the 2-0 edge.
  • In the final frame, Georgianne Defeo had a point-blank opportunity with 9:10 left, but Smith denied the shot with her right pad.
  • Middlebury capped the scoring 1:06 later. Following a penalty corner, Megan Fuqua lifted her shot toward the cage, before Lilly Branka tipped it in to secure the 3-0 triumph.
