Women’s Basketball Breezes Past Williams 84-43

The Middlebury women's basketball team outscored Williams 23-4 and 23-7 in Saturday's second and third quarters, pulling away for a convincing 84-43 triumph over the Ephs. With the win, the Panthers have been victorious in six of their last seven contests. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The first quarter was back and forth early on before Williams rattled off a 7-0 run for its largest lead of the contest at 11-6 on a free throw by Arianna Gerig with 3:28 left.
  • Middlebury battled to level the game in the waning seconds of the stanza, making it 15-15 on a jumper by Alexa Mustafaj.
  • Ahead 18-17 at the 7:46 mark of the second quarter, the Panthers recorded the next 18 points, fueled by seven from Mustafaj and six more by Kale Tornwini, for a 36-17 advantage with 43 ticks remaining. 
  • The teams traded buckets for a 38-19 Middlebury halftime edge.
  • The lead continued to grow in the third quarter as the Panthers put together a 14-2 run over 5:22 of action, capped on a layup by Mustafaj for the 52-21 advantage.
  • Middlebury was never challenged in the fourth quarter, extending its lead to as many as 44 (82-38) on a jumper from Emily Downer with 2:06 left, cruising to the 84-43 triumph. 
NOTES
  • Calie Messina posted a tremendous all-around game, finishing with career-best totals of 15 points, eight rebounds and seven steals to go along with four assists.
  • Mustafaj led all scorers with 33 points, including a sizzling 6-of-7 from beyond the arc. She surpassed the 30-point plateau for the fourth time this season and the seventh time in her career, moving her into second place in the program's scoring laurels with 1,442 points.
  • Keeley Baglio tallied a season-best nine points in just seven minutes off the bench.
  • The programs met for the 61st time with the Panthers winning five of the last seven matchups.
Middlebury returns to competition on Friday when it hosts Bates at 7:00 p.m.
