Women’s Basketball's Comeback Bid Falls Short Against #25 Bates

The Middlebury women's basketball team mounted a furious second-half comeback, but was unable to overcome 25th-ranked Bates, as the Bobcats earned the 65-54 victory on Friday night.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Bates opened the contest with a 12-1 burst, highlighted by seven points from Alexandra Long, and maintained an 11-point lead throughout the entirety of the first quarter
  • The Panthers continued to cut into the deficit over the initial 3:40 of the second stanza, scoring six unanswered points capped by a triple by Calie Messina to pull within five (21-16).
  • Bates responded with an 11-0 run over the next 3:13 of action. The spurt was highlighted by three shots from beyond the arc by Sarah Hughes to give the visitors a 32-16 lead.
  • The teams traded baskets over the remaining 2:41 before a layup from Emily Downer with 35 seconds to go made it a 36-21 scoreline at the halftime break.
  • With 3:35 elapsed in the third frame, Middlebury rattled off an 11-1 run over three minutes of action to trim the Bobcats' lead down to just five (42-37). Alexa Mustafaj contributed seven points during the run.
  • Bates ended the quarter by scoring seven of the final 11 points to take a 49-41 edge heading into the final stanza.
  • Trailing 51-41, the Panthers tallied a 6-0 spurt capped by a layup from Messina with 6:39 remaining to close the gap to four (51-47).
  • That was as close as Middlebury would get, as the Bobcats answered with their 10-3 decisive run to secure the 65-54 final score.

  • With four made free throws today, Mustafaj moved into second in the Middlebury record books with 279 charity tosses in her career.
  • Augusta Dixon registered her fifth-straight double-double, tallying 10 points and 10 rebounds.
  • The programs met for the 40th time and have split the all-time series evenly, with both teams winning 20 times.
The Panthers return to Pepin Gymnasium on Saturday when they host Tufts at 3:00 p.m. for senior day.
