Women’s Basketball Holds Off Colby 50-40

The Middlebury women's basketball team held off multiple second-half runs from Colby to claim a 50-40 victory on Saturday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The opening quarter was largely a defensive affair with the Panthers forcing four turnovers. With the score level at 8-8, Augusta Dixon drove down the floor and sank a buzzer-beating layup as time expired to give the Panthers a 10-8 lead heading into the second frame.
  • Middlebury began the second stanza on a 5-2 run over the initial 2:20. Katie Hollensteiner capped the burst with a deep three-pointer to give the hosts a 17-10 advantage.
  • The Panthers continued to maintain their lead throughout the quarter. With 2:35 remaining, Middlebury took its largest lead of the half (25-15) on a pair of charity tosses from Kale Tornwini
  • The Mules answered with five of the final eight points of the frame, including Amelia Hanscom sinking two free throws with 30 seconds left to cut the deficit to eight (28-20) at the intermission.
  • Trailing 32-23, Colby went on a 7-3 spurt to pull within five (35-30) on a jumper from Kate Olenik with 2:47 left.
  • Middlebury responded with a 5-0 run of its own, capped by a shot from beyond the arc by Bethany Lucey, before a last-second layup by Lydia Mordarski made it an eight-point game (40-32) with one quarter to play.
  • The Panthers opened the final frame by scoring four of the first six points, increasing their lead to 10 (44-34) on a pair of free throws by Dixon with 2:29 elapsed.
  • The Mules chipped away at the deficit over the next six minutes and sliced the Middlebury lead to five following two charity tosses from Chelsea Ibenegbu with 2:07 left.
  • That was as close as Colby would get, as the hosts locked down on defense and sank five foul shots to close out the 50-40 victory.
NOTES
  • Dixon poured in 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for her fourth-straight double-double and the 11th of her career.
  • The programs met for the 38th time with Colby holding a 21-17 advantage.
The Panthers are idle until next Saturday when they travel to Williams for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
