#1 Field Hockey Rushes Past Vermont State Castleton 12-0

The top-ranked Middlebury field hockey team opened its season with a resounding 12-0 win over Vermont State Castleton. The Panthers concluded the contest with 52 shots and 10 penalty corners, while not allowing a single shot or penalty corner for the visitors.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury dominated the opening quarter of play, scoring eight goals. Katie George tallied twice after just 3:09 of action. Audrey Lazar made it 3-0, tipping a cross into the bottom corner, before George secured her hat-trick with 6:23 elapsed, giving the hosts a 4-0 edge.   
  • The Panthers added four more markers throughout the initial stanza. With 22 seconds remaining, Hanna Medwar redirected a shot by Katherine Lantzy to give the Panthers an 8-0 lead after one quarter of action. 
  • George fired in her fourth goal of the night at the 23:11 mark, tipping in a pass from Medwar to give Middlebury a 9-0 advantage. 
  • The Panthers struck again with 26 seconds left in the first half. Sarah Bona drove into the circle from the right side and slotted her shot into the bottom-left corner to give Middlebury a 10-0 lead heading into the intermission.
  • Shawna Ferraro provided a strong offensive presence in the second half. The Panther flicked a backhanded effort over Castleton goalie Zoe Martin to record her first collegiate goal at the 37:36 mark.
  • Ferraro tallied her second marker of the contest 29 seconds into the fourth quarter, pouncing on a loose ball in front of the Spartans' goal to make it a 12-0 final score. 
NOTES
  • KK Newton earned her first career start in goal, while Izzy Redzic recorded 30 minutes of action in her collegiate debut in the cage.
  • George tied her career single-game high with four tallies.
  • The Panther defensive unit hasn't allowed a goal in 455:06 of action dating back to the 2022 NESCAC Quarterfinals against Hamilton.
  • With the victory, Middlebury won its 13th-straight season opener.
  • The two programs met for the 32nd time, with the Panthers holding a 26-4-2 advantage in the series.
Middlebury is back in action on Saturday when it takes on NESCAC foe Amherst at 2:00 p.m.
