Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#1 Field Hockey Races Past Skidmore 7-1

The top-ranked Middlebury field hockey team scored the final six goals of Wednesday's game on its way to a 7-1 victory over Skidmore.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers got on the scoreboard following their third penalty corner in a three-minute span of the first quarter. Amy Griffin tucked her shot inside the right post with 9:38 elapsed for the 1-0 edge.
  • Skidmore leveled the contest at 1-1 with 2:08 gone in the second stanza following a penalty corner. Tobi Dolan redirected a pass from the top of the arc that snuck into the lower-right corner of the cage.
  • Middlebury regained the lead for good just 3:55 later in the frame. An initial bid by Audrey Lazar was saved by Thoroughbred goalie Victoria Bodnar's pad. The rebound came back to the stick of Lazar, who lifted a shot into the right side of the goal while falling to the ground for a 2-1 advantage.
  • Griffin pushed the Panther edge to 3-1 with 5:12 remaining before the break on a great individual effort. She dribbled down the middle of the field through several defenders, blasting a shot into the lower-left board for her second goal of the contest.
  • Middlebury made it a 4-1 contest with 1:41 showing on the second-quarter clock. Lilly Thieberg made a nifty cutback move to her left before lacing a reverse sweep into the cage.
  • The visitors pushed it to a four-goal advantage (5-1) 53 seconds into the third quarter when Lazar recorded her second goal of the game on a tough-angled shot.
  • Tallies by Georgianne Defeo on a lofted attempt at 35:57 and Ellie Harrison on a rebound 4:32 later increased the edge to 7-1.
  • Skidmore looked to slice into the deficit with 4:09 left, but Brooke Golden's bid from the left side was kicked away by the right pad of Middlebury goalie KK Newton for the final 7-1 score.
NOTES
  • The markers by Thieberg, Defeo and Harrison were their first respective tallies of the season.
