Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Trio of First-Quarter Goals Lifts #1 Field Hockey Past #25 Wesleyan 5-1

The #1 Middlebury field hockey team scored all five of its goals in the opening half, cruising to a 5-1 victory over #25 Wesleyan on Saturday. With the victory, the Panthers extend their winning streak to 18-straight contests.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury opened the game with a flurry of chances. Audrey Lazar, Sadie LeStage and Hanna Medwar each registered shots in quick succession, but Cardinal goalie Audrey Pace stood strong to deny all three close-range bids.
  • The Panthers opened the scoring at the 5:23 mark. Medwar broke free down the right side and slipped her shot past Pace for a 1-0 lead.
  • Less than three minutes later, Middlebury doubled its advantage. Amy Griffin cut inside the arc and fired a long-distance reverse sweep that found the right corner, making it 2-0.
  • The Panthers continued to apply the pressure and took a 3-0 lead at the 9:49 mark. Lazar backhanded a pass to Caroline Segal who was sprinting into the arc. Segal controlled the pass and knocked her effort past Pace's right pad.
  • Middlebury added a fourth goal with 4:21 elapsed in the second quarter. Following a penalty corner, Lilly Branka lofted a shot over a Wesleyan defender and into the top-right corner of the cage to give the Panthers a 4-0 advantage.
  • The hosts extended their lead with just under six minutes remaining in the half. Branka's initial effort from the left side was denied, but she was on hand to tap in the rebound to make it 5-0 at the halftime break.
  • Wesleyan looked to get on the board after 1:07 in the third stanza. Annabel Cincotta fired a shot that was stopped by Middlebury goalie KK Newton. Helen Deretchin gathered the rebound, but her bid was cleared off the goal line on a defensive save from Kelly Cooper.
  • The Panthers almost scored a sixth to begin the final frame. Segal cut in on the right side of the arc and rifled a low drive that Pace saved. LeStage picked up the loose ball and blasted an effort that rang the right post and rolled out of play.
  • The Cardinals scored their lone goal with 0:00 left on the clock. The visitors earned back-to-back penalty corners with one second remaining in the contest. On the final play, Deretchin flipped a pass to Sarah Porter who tucked home her shot from close range to bring the final score to 5-1.
