Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#1 Field Hockey Tops #3 Babson 3-2

The #1 Middlebury field hockey team topped third-ranked Babson 3-2 in a battle between two undefeated programs. The Beavers struck first in the contest, but the Panthers rattled off three unanswered goals and hung on for the victory.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Babson opened the scoring at the 9:38 mark. Sinead Walsh slipped a pass to Jackie Hill on the right side of the arc, as her shot found the bottom-left corner to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
  • The Panthers responded less than two minutes later. Katherine Lantzy drove through the midfield and found Katie George in front of the net. George's initial effort was denied, but she collected the rebound and flipped a backhanded shot into the far right corner to level the score at 1-1.
  • At the 13:23 mark, Amy Griffin nearly put Middlebury in front. The midfielder fired a long range shot that was saved by the legs of Beaver goalie Bayla Furmanek.
  • The Panthers took the lead with 3:56 remaining in the half. Lilly Branka dribbled across the arc and found Audrey Lazar, who knocked her bid inside the near post for a 2-1 advantage at the halftime break.
  • Middlebury continued to apply pressure and took a two-goal lead (3-1) at the 39:41 mark. Following two saves from Furmanek, Sadie LeStage pounced on the rebound and blasted a low strike from the right side that nestled inside the far post.
  • The Panthers were pushing for another goal for much of the third stanza. With just under two minutes to go, Branka and George each had close-range bids denied on the doorstep to keep it a two-goal contest heading into the final period.
  • With 3:08 elapsed in the fourth frame, Babson nearly scored. Caroline DiGiovanni broke away for a one-on-one chance, but Middlebury goalie KK Newton stood tall and thwarted the shot to keep the hosts' two-goal edge.
  • The Beavers pulled within one (3-2) at the 55:31 mark. Following a penalty corner, Berit Sharrow launched a pass toward the goal that was tipped into the left corner by Andrea Marguerite.
  • The Panthers looked to regain their two-goal advantage with less than four minutes to go, but Furmanek denied four-consecutive bids in a matter of seconds to keep it a one-goal game.
  • Babson earned a penalty corner at the 58:11 mark, but a shot from Walsh whistled inches wide of the Middlebury cage and Middlebury held on for the 3-2 triumph.
