The Middlebury softball team split a doubleheader with Hamilton on Saturday afternoon. The Continentals took game one by a 7-1 scoreline before the Panthers picked up a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Hamilton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After loading the bases, the Continentals put three runs on the board with a single, a fielder's choice and a Panther miscue.
- In the following inning, Hamilton tacked on two more runs. Katlynn McGivney and Emma Tansky each singled and stole bases to put runners on second and third. Charlie Quinn singled to plate McGivney and make it 4-0. Three batters later, Natalie Beebe drove in Tansky with a base hit to center field to extend the lead to 5-0.
- The Continentals took a seven-run lead in the third. With runners on first and second, Quinn roped a double to center, clearing the bases and making it 7-0.
- Middlebury plated one run in the seventh inning. Kristyn Carroll bunted for a single and Abby Santis smacked a base hit to right field. Megan Fox moved Carroll to third on a fly ball before a sacrifice fly by McKenna Lont brought her home to bring the final score to 7-1.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Hamilton opened the scoring in the second. Beebe began the inning with a walk, and Ella Heftved followed with a single. Alison Zorn moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, and Alessandra Pirante drove in the game's first run with an infield single to third base to make it 1-0.
- The Panthers responded in the top of the third. Santis reached and advanced to second on an error in the outfield. Fox was next up and got on base via a Continental miscue, allowing Santis to cross home plate and tie the game at 1-1.
- Middlebury snagged the victory in the final inning as Carroll blasted a game-winning home run to right field to earn the 2-1 triumph.
NOTES
- With hits in both games, Santis increased her hitting streak to eight-consecutive games.
- Middlebury and Hamilton met for the 58th and 59th times, with the Panthers holding a 43-16 all-time series lead.
Middlebury will conclude the regular season on Sunday when it travels to Hartford, Connecticut to face Trinity in doubleheader action. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m
