#1 Women’s Lacrosse Cruises To A 19-4 Victory Over SUNY Geneseo

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team scored 15 goals in the first half en route to a 19-4 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Panthers move on to face #13 Trinity in the regional semifinal.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jane Earley got Middlebury going with a free-position effort that found the bottom-right corner of the net with 1:55 elapsed in the first quarter to make it 1-0.
  • SUNY Geneseo responded with a goal only 53 seconds later. Alaina Reina made a move on her defender and drove to the goal before firing her shot into the left corner to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Panthers rattled off five-unanswered tallies to close the opening stanza. Maggie Coughlin highlighted the run, scoring the first two and assisting on the final two to give Middlebury a 6-1 lead.
  • In the second quarter, the Panthers continued to extend their advantage. Sara Ellinghaus began the stanza by finding the top-left corner with a close-range effort at the 13:52 mark. Hope Shue followed with back-to-back goals and Kelcey Dion set up Anna Spehr to push Middlebury's lead to nine (10-1) with 3:13 expired.
  • Coughlin added two more goals over a 1:49 span to extend the Panther lead to 12-1 at the 9:43 mark before markers from Emma Inouye, Caroline Messer and Susan Rowley made it 15-1 at the halftime break.
  • With 3:21 elapsed in the third stanza, Britt Nawrocki slipped a pass to Messer who fired a turnaround shot into the top-left corner to give Middlebury a 16-1 advantage.
  • At the 4:25 mark, Jamee Numan drove past multiple defenders and ripped a shot into the top shelf to extend the hosts' lead to 16 (17-1).
  • The Knights opened the fourth quarter by tallying three-straight goals. Emily Salanger, Sophie Lyko and Maira Brennen each found the back of the net to make it 17-4 with 8:43 left to play.
  • With 5:27 remaining, Nawrocki added her name to the scoresheet with a nifty bouncing shot, while Messer completed her hat trick at the 3:50 mark to give the Panthers the 19-4 victory.
NOTES
  • The Panthers have now won 24- straight games dating back to the 2022 season.
  • Middlebury and SUNY Geneseo played for just the second time, with the only other meeting coming in last year's NCAA Tournament.
  • With the win, the Panthers have advanced to the regional semifinal round on 26 occasions. 
  • Coughlin's four goals and two assists gave her a season-high six points.
  • Middlebury's defense was outstanding in the win. The unit didn't allow a goal in the second and third quarters and caused 16 turnovers.
