The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team eased past #13 Trinity 22-9 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. With the victory, the Panthers extended their winning streak to 25-straight triumphs and now own a 20-0 mark for the season.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury struck first when Jane Earley cut through the circle and found nylon with 12:18 showing on the clock.
- With nine minutes left, an initial shot by Bantam Brooke Kurtz hit the right pipe, but Molly McGuckin earned a free position seven seconds later and cashed in to level the score 1-1.
- The Panthers closed out the quarter with four-consecutive goals. Susan Rowley notched a quick-stick marker, Anna Spehr bounced one in and Hope Shue tallied twice to increase the advantage to 5-1.
- Less than 30 seconds into the second frame, Kelcey Dion weaved through a pair of Trinity defenders and scored to make it 6-1.
- A low sidearm shot by Natalie Miller cut the deficit to four (6-2), but Shue found the upper-right corner to extend the advantage 7-2.
- Grace Denious drove down the middle of the circle and slotted a shot into the lower left corner to close the gap to four (7-3) with 11:06 left in the half.
- Shue, Dion and Earley each scored over the next five minutes to give the Panthers a 10-3 lead.
- Trinity would not go away, as McGuckin lifted the ball over goalie Annie Enrietto's shoulder and then converted a free position to make it 10-5 with 4:10 left on the clock.
- Middlebury closed out the half with a trio of markers to increase the advantage to 13-5 at the break.
- The Panthers tallied seven goals in the third quarter, with a pair coming from both Earley and Rowley, to take a commanding 20-6 advantage.
- Britt Nawrocki opened the scoring in the fourth with a fine finish, but Trinity responded with three-straight goals to make it 21-9. The final marker of the span was a beautiful free-position shot that Lily Ives fired in from the left arc.
- Charlotte Price closed out the scoring with 52 seconds left, making it 22-9.
NOTES
- The teams played for the 45th time today, with Middlebury winning the last eight meetings.
- Earley, Rowley and Shue each tallied five goals during the contest, while Earley posted double-digit draw controls (11) for the fourth time this season.
The Panthers take on the winner of #6 The College of New Jersey and #12 Colby on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with a trip to the final four on the line.
