Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

#1 Middlebury Rushes Past #7 Wesleyan 16-9

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team scored Saturday's first eight goals and cruised to a 16-9 victory at #7 Wesleyan. The Panthers increased their overall winning streak to 16-straight triumphs and have defeated seven nationally-ranked opponents this season.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury struck with 1:52 expired in the contest. Hope Shue circled the ball around the arc before finding Anna Spehr in the middle. Spehr broke away from the defender and slipped the ball inside the right panel for the 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers went ahead 2-0 on a pass from behind the goal, as Caroline Messer battled the Wesleyan defenders and Cardinal goalie Abby Wolk for a loose ball. The ball hit Messer's stick while falling to ground and Wolk was out of her crease as the ball trickled over the goal line.
  • Susan Rowley increased the Middlebury lead to 3-0 from the left corner of the arc, sprinting in and sneaking her effort inside the left pipe as she fell to ground.
  • A free-position goal by Kelcey Dion while a player up and a nifty goal by Rowley over the goalie's left shoulder from close range gave the Panthers a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Panthers pushed their lead to six (6-0) when Anna Spehr scored 1:05 into the second quarter on a pretty pass from Rowley.
  • The visitors extended the advantage to 8-0 when Caroline Adams scored two goals just 29 seconds apart in the early minutes of the stanza.
  • The Cardinals got on the board with free-position goals by Olivia Lai and Kiara Tangney, sandwiched around tallies from Middlebury's Maggie Coughlin and Rowley for a 10-2 Panther lead at the break.
  • Kate Balicki pulled the hosts to within seven (10-3) on a goal 4:31 into the third quarter.
  • Hope Shue responded with a pair of tallies just over a minute apart to push the lead out to nine (12-3) with 8:16 left in the third.
  • Wesleyan tallied five of the next seven goals, slicing the deficit to six at 14-8 on a goal by Lai with 9:53 left in the contest.
  • Goals by Sara Ellinghaus and Jane Earley  four minutes apart followed by a tally from Lai for the Cardinals provided the final 16-9 score.
NOTES
  • Earley scored twice and claimed a game-high 11 draw controls.
  • Shue tallied her 100th career point in the victory (86G, 16A).
  • Dion finished with a career-best three assists to go along with a goal.
  • The Panthers, who lead Division III in clearing percentage, were a perfect 22-22 in the victory.
