Softball Sweeps NVU-Lyndon in Midweek Twinbill

The Middlebury softball team swept Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in midweek action by scores of 16-2 in five innings and 9-1 in six innings on Wednesday.
 
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Hornets struck first in the opening frame. With the bases loaded, Vicky Valentine had an RBI groundout to drive in Amber Everett who came home to score the game's first run. 
  • Middlebury responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Kristyn Carroll and Abby Santis each walked to open the inning and advanced on a flyout from Megan Fox. Jennifer Westphal followed with a single to bring in Carroll and tie the game (1-1). Lont brought in Santis with a sacrifice fly and Tori Papaleo slapped a base hit to left to plate Westphal and make it 3-1.
  • The Panthers broke the game open in the second. With the bases loaded, Westphal reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Carroll to cross home plate. Lont drove in a pair with a base hit to right center and an RBI groundout by Papaleo extended the lead to 7-1.  
  • In the third, Caitlin Viola led off by smacking a triple to right center. Carroll followed with a hard-hit single up the middle to make it 8-1. After Santis singled and Fox walked, Westphal ripped a single past the shortstop to give Middlebury an eight-run lead (9-1). The Panthers tacked on five more runs in the inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Brooke Ventrelle and Samantha Hausman, to take a 14-1 advantage.
  • Middlebury added two more runs in the fourth on base hits from Ventrelle and Marina Lyon to bring the score to 16-1.
  • The Hornets scored a tallyin the fifth for the final 16-2 score.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Following three walks to load the bases, Jordyn Johnson scampered home on a wild pitch to break the deadlock. Lont plated Carroll with a run-scoring groundout. Later in the inning, Fox drove in Westphal from third base with a single to left to give Middlebury a three-run edge.
  • NVU-Lyndon responded with a run in the top of the fourth. The Hornets loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter. Audrey Tembreull hit a scorching ground ball into the hole at shortstop that allowed Valentine to cross home plate. 
  • The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Lont began the inning with an infield single, scoring when Fox blasted a home run over the left-center field fence. Two batters later, Jewel Ashbrook launched a homer to left to increase Middlebury's lead to 6-1. 
  • The Panthers closed the game in the bottom of the sixth. Santis and Lont each reached on a single and crossed home plate on a booming double by Fox off the left-field wall. Fox would later come around to score on a wild pitch to make the final score 9-1.
NOTES
  • Middlebury's pitching was sensational during both games of the doubleheader, not allowing a single earned run. 
  • Fox recorded five RBI in game two to increase her season total to 32, while also hitting her team-best fourth homer of the season.
  • Middlebury and NVU-Lyndon met for the 20th and 21st times this afternoon. With two victories, the Panthers hold a decisive 16-5 advantage in the all-time series and have won the last 14 contests.
With the wins, the Panthers improve to 15-13 and will travel to Wesleyan on Saturday for NESCAC action.
