Middlebury Falls to Williams On Senior Day

The Middlebury softball team came up just short in the opening game Saturday, with Williams edging the Panthers 3-2. The Ephs came out strong in the nightcap to claim a 10-3 triumph.

During the intermission between contests, Middlebury honored seniors Jordyn Johnson, Lizzie Hannafey, Tori Papaleo and Abby Santis.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Williams got on the board in the third inning. Sydney Fleming reached on a fielder's choice, but as Middlebury threw out Kayla Chang at third, Tayler Wise scampered home to make it 1-0.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Kristyn Carroll walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Santis, and eventually touched home to tie the game 1-1 on a single up the middle by McKenna Lont.
  • The Panthers threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Jennifer Wespahl doubled down the left field line, sending Cece Ziegler to third, but Sadie Leonard struck out the final batter to keep the game deadlocked.
  • The Ephs took a 3-1 advantage in the top of the eighth. Bailey Burger-Moore singled to load the bases, before a base-hit down the right field line by pinch-hitter Savannah Slater drove in Kelly McGuigan. Later in the inning, Fleming crossed home plate on a fielder's choice by Vicky Trujillo Balderas for the winning run.
  • Middlebury got one run back in its final at-bat to cut the deficit to one (3-2). Santis singled and advanced to second on an error, before scoring on a single down the right field line by Megan Fox.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Williams carried its momentum into the second game, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
  • The Panthers cut the deficit down to one (4-3) in the bottom of the second. Carroll blasted the ball through the right side to plate Papaleo, before a single to center by Santis drove in Caitlin Viola and Johnson.
  • That was as close as Middlebury would get. The Ephs added a run in the fourth, a pair of scores in the fifth and another in the sixth to make it 8-3.
  • Williams capped the scoring with two runs in the seventh to secure the 11-3 victory.
NOTES
  • The teams met for the 69th and 70th times today.
