The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team scored Sunday's first 10 goals, cruising to a 13-6 victory over #22 Hamilton. The Panthers extended their overall winning streak to 15-straight triumphs and have won 25-consecutive games as the road team or at neutral sites.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Susan Rowley started the frenzy while driving to the net with 3:31 elapsed in the quarter, while Niki Mormile and Caroline Messer tallied goals 41 seconds apart.
- Free-position markers by Maggie Coughlin and Hope Shue increased the lead to five. Shue muscled her way through traffic, bouncing a ball under the legs of Continental goalie Maeve Luparello with 49 seconds left for a 6-0 edge.
- Back-to-back goals by Jane Earley in the opening minutes of the second quarter made it 8-0 in favor of the Panthers, highlighted by the attacker catching a pass from Sara Ellinghaus in traffic before spinning around and firing it into the goal.
- Coughlin made the difference nine (9-0) near the midway point of the quarter, while Messer started the 10-goal running clock 47 seconds later on a quick-stick tally with 6:45 left before halftime.
- Hamilton got on the scoreboard with 4:29 remaining when Aine Cleary fired a low shot just past the stick of goalie Annie Enrietto on a free-position opportunity.
- Ellinghaus made it an 11-1 contest with 3:24 left on a turnaround shot, while a free-position goal by Continental Alex Orlando with nine seconds showing on the clock made it 11-2 headed to halftime.
- In the low-scoring third quarter, Hamilton posted the first pair of markers when Sarah Creamer bounced in a shot on a free-position chance 1:58 into the frame, while Abby Smith scored 2:33 later.
- Ellinghaus recorded Middlebury's lone goal of the quarter, bouncing a shot from five yards with 7:24 left for a 12-4 lead.
- Cleary scored for the hosts with 6:40 to go in the game on a sidearm shot to make it 12-5, before the teams traded the final two tallies for the 13-6 final.
NOTES
- The Panther offense featured a balanced attack with eight different players scoring a goal. Coughlin led the way with four points (2G, 2A).
- Erica Barr collected a game-high four draw controls, moving her into third place in the program's career record books with 184.
- Enrietto played the first half in front of the net, improving to 26-0 for her career.
- The two programs squared off for the 14th meeting in the all-time series, with Middlebury owning an 11-3 record.
The Panthers return to competition Saturday with a NESCAC road contest at Wesleyan starting at 12:00 p.m.
