Softball Drops Pair to #8 Tufts

The Middlebury softball team dropped a pair of home contests to eighth-ranked Tufts on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers fell 9-0 in five innings during the opener, while the Jumbos posted a 6-1 win in the nightcap.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Tufts took an early two-run lead in the first inning. Bela Jimenez and Michelle Adelman each singled up the middle before Kaitlyn Perucci tripled to right center to make it 2-0.
  • The Jumbos extended their advantage to 4-0 in the third. With the bases loaded, Rachel Moore singled into center field to drive in Jimenez and Perucci.
  • Tufts tacked on five more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run triple from Perucci, to make the final score 9-0. 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Jumbos jumped out to a 3-0 edge in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, Haley Leimbach singled down the left-field line to plate two runners, before a bloop single by Lauryn Horita brought home Moore to make it 3-0.
  • Tufts made it a 5-0 contest  in the second inning on a two-run single up the middle by Moore.
  • The Panthers answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Caitlin Viola singled to right field and Lizzie Hannafey laid down a brilliant bunt single just inside the first-base line. Jordyn Johnson followed by roping a line-drive double down the left-field line to drive in Viola, making it 5-1.
  • In the top of the sixth, Tufts tacked on a sixth run and closed out the game to take a 6-1 triumph.
NOTES
  • Middlebury turned a season-high three double plays in the first game.
  • The Panthers and the Jumbos met for the 18th and 19th times in the all-time series.
