The Middlebury softball team was edged in a pair of contests against Colby on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers fell in the opener 5-2, before a comeback bid in the nightcap came up just short 3-2.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Mules jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Brenna Forbes doubled down the left-field line and moved to third on a fly out before scoring on a throwing error.
- The Panthers answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Kristyn Carroll doubled to left and moved to third on a throw, coming home on a sacrifice fly by Abby Santis.
- Colby made it a 2-1 game in the second when Courtney Schumacher singled to right and raced to second on a fielding miscue. She advanced to third on a sac fly and touched the plate on a sac fly by Hannah Materson.
- In the third, the Mules loaded the bases before Emma Burnham cleared them with a three-run double to center for a 5-1 lead.
- Middlebury pulled to within three (5-2) in the sixth on a one-out RBI single to left center by Jewel Ashbrook, plating Lizzie Hannafey who came on as a pinch runner. With runners on first and third, Colby pitcher Sam Ahlholm recorded a pair of groundouts to end the opportunity for the final 5-2 score.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Mules struck with a single run in the second inning of the nightcap. Carissa Cassidy started the frame with a bloop single down the left-field line and later scored when Victoria Ramirez ripped an infield hit to third for the 1-0 edge.
- Colby pushed its lead to 2-0 in the fourth. Jackie Hill legged out a triple down the right-field line, scoring on a short popup in front of the plate by Burnham.
- In the fifth, the Panthers cut the deficit in half. Jordyn Johnson was hit by a pitch to start the frame, moved to second on a wild pitch and scurried home on a double down the line in right by Carroll.
- The score remained 2-1 until the seventh. Forbes singled, stole second and made it a two-run contest on a base hit up the middle from Logan Luebbe.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Middlebury loaded the bases with no outs. Following a groundout, the hosts pulled to within one (3-2) on a fielder's choice off the bat of Cece Ziegler which brought in pinch runner Marina Lyon. Mule pitcher Abby Orso worked out of the jam and ended the game on a sharp groundout to first for the final 3-2 tally.
NOTES
- Carroll was a combined 4-6 at the plate with three doubles and an RBI. She leads the team and ranks fourth in the NESCAC with a .471 batting average.
- Middlebury and Colby played for the 21st and 22nd times on Saturday.
Middlebury remains at home for a NESCAC doubleheader on Sunday against #8 Tufts. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
