The Middlebury softball team fell 3-0 in its NESCAC opener on Saturday, but came back to edge Bates 4-3 in the nightcap and split the series. This marked the first meeting between the programs since 2010.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Bates took a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the third. Amanda Taylor scampered home when Sarah cooked reached on a fielder's choice.
- Delaney Rankin increased the Bobcats' lead in the fourth with a home run to center field.
- Bates capped the scoring in the fifth when Cassidy Musco took advantage of a Panther miscue for the 3-0 final score.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- In the top of the second, Megan Fox blasted her team-leading third round tripper, bringing McKenna Lont home for the 2-0 lead.
- Middlebury tacked on another run in the third when Kristyn Carroll crossed home plate on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
- The Bobcats got one run back in their half of the inning when a double by Cooke brought Taylor home.
- Bates wouldn't go away, knotting the contest 3-3 in the fifth. Taylor scored on a ground out by Ella Maher, before a single through the right side by Grace Householter drove in Musco.
- Carroll took advantage of a wild pitch in the top of the seventh, scoring the game-winning run to make it 4-3.
- Bates threatened in its half of the inning, but Jordyn Johnson recorded two outs in right field, before Lont struck out the final batter.
NOTES
- With a hit in each game today, Lont has now recorded at least one hit in six-consecutive contests. She also earned her fourth career win in the second game to improve to 4-1.
- Carroll has scored a pair of runs in half of Middlebury's games so far this year.
- Due to field conditions, the doubleheader was played at Colby College.
The Panthers travel to Bowdoin on Sunday for a two-game series, which marks the first meeting since the 2018 season.
