Softball Splits Two-Game Set At Bowdoin

The Middlebury softball team split a two-game set against Bowdoin on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers took the first game by a 3-2 score, before falling in the later contest 9-1 in five innings.
 
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Polar Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Katryna Dukehart doubled to left field, bringing Angelina Mayers home from first base. 
  • Middlebury responded in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Tori Papaleo popped a sacrifice fly to center field which allowed Lizzie Hannafey to cross home plate and level the score at 1-1.
  • The Panthers took the lead in the fifth. Cece Ziegler opened the inning by reaching on a Bowdoin miscue. Kristyn Carroll and Abby Santis followed with a walk and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. McKenna Lont reached on a fielder's choice which drove in Ziegler and Megan Fox recorded an RBI groundout which plated Carroll to give Middlebury a 3-1 edge.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Polar Bears cut the deficit to one (3-2) on a home run by Mayers. 
  • With the Panthers leading by one in the bottom of the seventh, Jewel Ashbrook closed out the victory, retiring three Bowdoin batters in order to secure the 3-2 win.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Polar Bears opened the game with three runs in the first inning. With runners on first and second, Dukehart doubled to left field, driving in Mayers and Lilly Armstrong. Chloe Garcia followed with a single to bring home Dukehart and give Bowdoin a 3-0 edge.
  • Bowdoin extended its lead to 6-0 in the next inning. A single from JK Bradley scored Kyla Gary. Later in the inning with runners on second and third, Garcia reached safely on a Panther miscue, allowing two more runs to cross home.
  • Middlebury tallied its run in the top of the third. The Panthers loaded the bases for Ziegler, who reached on a fielder's choice and drove in Caitlin Viola to make the score 6-1.
  • The Polar Bears tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the third. A double from Armstrong plated Gary before Bradley singled to left field to send Armstrong across home and give Bowdoin an 8-1 advantage.
  • A sacrifice fly from Kiera Dent in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Polar Bears a 9-1 lead which would prove to be the final score.
NOTES
  • Middlebury and Bowdoin faced off for the 14th and 15th times. The Polar Bears lead the all-time series 9-6 following today's games.
  • In the opening game, Samantha Hausman earned her first win of the season in the circle.
