Top-Ranked Women’s Lacrosse Pulls Away From #16 Bowdoin 15-9

The #1 Middlebury women's lacrosse team opened NESCAC play by downing 16th-ranked Bowdoin on Wednesday night. The Polar Bears battled for much of the contest, but the Panthers were able to pull away late to secure the 15-9 triumph.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jane Earley opened the scoring for the Panthers after 2:02 of action. The attacker raced around a defender before firing the ball into the net for a 1-0 advantage. 
  • With 9:36 remaining in the first quarter, Susan Rowley doubled the score. Earley broke through the defense and found Rowley on the left side of the crease to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
  • The Polar Bears answered with goals from Lauren Burke and Fiona Bundy to level the score at 2-2 with 4:15 to go.
  • Middlebury closed the stanza with three unanswered goals. Niki Mormile scored a free-position marker at the 3:15 mark, before Hope Shue rattled off a pair of goals to give the Panthers a 5-2 lead at the break.
  • With 3:14 elapsed in the second quarter, Sophia Sudano brought Bowdoin within two (5-3), making a move on a defender to score a free-position shot.
  • The teams traded goals on free-position bids in the middle of the stanza. Earley slotted a shot into the left corner to make the score 6-3, before Emelia Krakora responded with a goal of her own to bring the score to 6-4 with 6:30 remaining. 
  • Anna Spehr and Rowley tacked on two more goals in the final 1:17 of the first half to give the Panthers an 8-4 edge into the halftime break.
  • Just 53 seconds into the third, Middlebury took a five-goal lead (9-4). Caroline Messer took a pass from Kelcey Dion and slipped her shot into the net.
  • The Polar Bears would not go away, scoring three-consecutive goals in 2:16 to pull to within two (9-7) at the 7:51 mark.
  • With 6:13 remaining in the quarter, Earley completed her hat trick to restore the three-goal advantage (10-7). 
  • The Polar Bears cut the deficit to two (10-8) on a goal from Sudano, but Earley responded less than a minute later, converting on another free-position chance to give the Panthers an 11-8 edge heading into the final period of play. 
  • Middlebury struck first to open the final quarter as Earley tallied her fifth goal of the contest to make the score 12-8 with just 39 seconds elapsed.
  • Bundy kept Bowdoin within striking distance by registering her second goal of the evening with 13:20 to go, cutting the lead down to three (12-9).
  • From there, the Panthers would not concede again and controlled the remainder of the quarter as two goals from Dion and one from Rowley helped seal the 15-9 victory. 
NOTES
  • With the triumph, Middlebury has won 21-straight games on the road.
  • The contest was the 46th all-time meeting between the Panthers and the Polar Bears. Middlebury leads the series 41-5.
  • With five goals and an assist, Earley has tallied at least one point in seven-straight games and 33 of the last 34 contests.
  • Annie Enrietto continues her unbeaten streak in net, boasting an 18-0 record.
