#1 Women’s Lacrosse Breezes Past Babson 20-5 In Season Opener

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team opened its season on a snowy day in Vermont, breezing past Babson 20-5. With the win, the Panthers extend their win streak dating back to six-consecutive victories.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury got out to a quick start, rattling off six-straight goals. Maggie Coughlin and Hope Shue each tallied a pair of goals during the span.
  • Babson took advantage of an extra-player situation at the eight-minute mark, as Emily Curtis made a move around a defender to make it 6-1.
  • The Panthers increased the advantage to 8-1 with a free-position marker by Jane Earley, before Shue completed a hat trick.
  • Babson got one goal back with an extra player with 4:45 to play. Anna Katherine sent a pass from behind the goal to a cutting Nicole Derveau who found nylon to cut the deficit to six (8-2).
  • Susan Rowley and Coughlin each had a goal to close out the opening quarter, while Earley tallied a pair of markers to make it 12-2.
  • At the 13:22 mark of the second stanza, Middlebury's Caroline Adams sent Anna Spehr a nifty pass from behind the goal that Spehr put away.
  • The Beavers cut the deficit to 13-3 when Curtis found the upper-right corner for her second goal of the game.
  • A bounce shot by Earley and a snipe by Spehr on the left pipe gave the Panthers a 15-3 lead at the break.
  • Babson struck first out of the intermission with Erin Jayne sprinting down the field on a fast break, before finding Curtis on the left pipe who lofted the ball over the shoulder of Panther goalie Gina Driscoll to make it 15-4.
  • With 3:16 left in the third, Jamee Numan snagged the ball out of the air, forcing a failed clearing attempt for the Beavers. She dished a pass to Emma Inouye who scored to make it 16-4.
  • Kelcey Dion tallied a goal as time expired in the third, and Middlebury's Niki Mormile, Spehr and Rowley closed out the Panther scoring in the fourth to make it 20-4. 
  • Darveau capped the game with a nice goal for Babson for the 20-5 final score.
NOTES
  • Earley led the team with five points (4G, 1A) and nine draw controls. 
  • Annie Enrietto continues her perfect record in goal, notching her 17th-straight triumph.
