Softball Closes Florida Trip with Split Against Grinnell and Oberlin

The Middlebury softball team closed its spring break trip to Florida with games against Grinnell and Oberlin. The Panthers dropped the first contest to the Pioneers 8-0 in six innings, before bouncing back to claim a five-inning 11-2 triumph over the Yeowomen on Friday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS VS. GRINNELL
  • The Pioneers opened the scoring in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Kambria Anson singled to second base to drive in Emma DiGiacomo to make the score 1-0.
  • Grinnell increased its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third, as an RBI groundout from Samantha Chu allowed Amanda Ramierz to cross the plate.
  • In the fourth, a three-run double by Ramirez cleared the bases to give the Pioneers a 5-0 lead.
  • Grinnell scored three times in the top half of the sixth inning to make the final score 8-0.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. OBERLIN
  • Middlebury struck first against the Yeowomen, taking a 1-0 lead in the opening inning when Cece Ziegler scored on a passed ball.
  • Oberlin leveled the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the first. Mia Brito reached on a single to left and eventually came around to score following a Panther miscue.
  • Middlebury regained the lead in the second inning. Tori Papaleo reached on a base hit and advanced all the way from first on a Yeowomen miscue to give the Panthers a 2-1 edge.
  • In the third inning, Middlebury broke the game open scoring four times. With the bases loaded, Papaleo doubled down the left-field line to drive in McKenna Lont and Kristyn Carroll, before Jennifer Westphal brought Jewel Ashbrook and Papaleo home to make the score 6-1.
  • The Yeowomen answered with one run in the bottom of the third. Kailey Dunham reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Maya Means to score and cut the deficit to four (6-2).
  • The Panthers tacked on another run in the fourth. After Abby Santis  reached first base on an Oberlin error, Carroll blasted a triple into left field that drove Santis in and increased the lead to 7-2.
  • Middlebury closed the game with four more runs in the fifth to extend its lead. Lont singled with the bases loaded to plate Santis and Carroll, while Ashbrook followed with a triple to deep right center that scored Megan Fox and Lont to make it 11-2.
