The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team handed #3 The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) its first loss of the season. The Panthers topped the Lions 17-11 to snap TCNJ's seven-game winning streak, while improving to 7-0.
Jane Earley set a school record for most draw controls in a single game during the victory, winning 13.
HIGHLIGHTS
- TCNJ came out strong, claiming the opening faceoff and striking just 19 seconds into the contest. Katherine Naibburg found a cutting Anna Devlin who slipped the ball into the goal to make it 1-0.
- Middlebury responded with 11:20 left in the quarter when Caroline Messer drove to the net and eluded goalie Julia Charest's shoulder to make it 1-1.
- The Lions took a 2-1 edge less than a minute later when Ally Tobler found nylon.
- With just under 10 minutes to go, Panther Susan Rowley powered past a defender inside the arc and scored, knotting the game at two goals apiece.
- At the 4:01 mark, Middlebury's Sara Ellinghaus received a pass from Maggie Coughlin and snuck the ball inside the left pipe for the 3-2 edge after one quarter of action.
- The Panthers extended their advantage to 6-2 early in the second frame with goals by Niki Mormile, Coughlin and Ellinghaus.
- The Lions cut the deficit to three (6-3) when Devlin drove to the goal on a free-position attempt and slipped the ball inside the left post.
- Earley answered with three-consecutive tallies, increasing the lead to 9-3, before a free-position marker by TCNJ's Anna Wright made it 9-4 at the break.
- The teams traded goals to start the second half, before the Lions rattled off four-straight markers to cut the lead down to a pair (10-8).
- Messer halted the Lions' scoring frenzy, scoring with 7:28 left in the third quarter, but TCNJ's Natalie Berry found the back of the net to slice the lead back down to just two (11-9).
- Middlebury closed out the quarter with three-straight goals, extending the advantage to 14-9.
- The team's traded a pair of goals each in the fourth quarter, before Coughlin capped the scoring with two seconds left for the 17-11 triumph.
NOTES
- Kylie Wilson was a stalwart on defense, causing four turnovers and scooping up three groundballs.
- With the victory, the Panthers level the all-time series with TCNJ at 8-8, with Middlebury winning three-straight meetings.
- The Panthers are the first team to post a double-digit goal total against the Lions this season.
Middlebury returns to the Green Mountain State to host Bates on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
