#1 Women’s Lacrosse Breezes Past Bates 13-2

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team breezed past Bates 13-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers increased their overall winning streak to 13-straight victories.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury opened the scoring with 5:25 elapsed when Jane Earley fired a free-position shot inside the right post from the middle of the zone. 
  • The Panthers extended their lead to 2-0 just 1:10 later. Hope Shue bounced a free-position shot into the bottom-right corner.
  • At the 4:38 mark, Susan Rowley tallied her first goal of the game. The Panther attacker took a shot from distance that snuck past Bobcat goalie Cammie Lavoie and nestled into the top of the net to give Middlebury a 3-0 edge after the first quarter. 
  • Kelcey Dion increased the Panther advantage to four (4-0) after just 16 seconds into the second stanza. Dion received a pass from Caroline Messer and slipped the ball into the net for a four-goal edge. 
  • Earley pushed the Middlebury lead to 5-0 at the 11:35 mark. The Panther made a move around a defender before slotting her shot into the top-left corner from the right side of the crease.
  • With 5:52 elapsed, a free-position shot from Rowley pushed the Panthers' lead to 6-0.
  • Bates applied pressure late in the first half. With 4:50 remaining, a free-position shot from Caroline Taggert forced a kick save from goalie Annie Enrietto.
  • Middlebury added a seventh goal with 3:21 left in the half. Earley tucked her free-position shot into the top-left corner of the net to make the score 7-0.
  • Bates looked to score as time expired in the second quarter, but Taggert's last-second effort was turned aside by Enrietto to keep the Panthers' lead at seven heading into the break.
  • Middlebury continued to pull away in the third quarter. Goals from Shue, Sara Ellinghaus and Earley in the first 2:30 of the stanza gave the Panthers a 10-0 advantage.
  • Bates tallied its first goal with 9:28 to go in the third. Trish Balser found Lauren Wong with a beautiful pass to the back post and Wong fired her shot into the left corner to make the score 10-1
  • Dion restored the Panthers' 10-goal edge (11-1) with 12 seconds remaining in the stanza. The attacker drove through the defense and fired a shot past Lavoie to close out the quarter.
  • In the fourth, back-to-back goals from Jamee Numan increased the Middlebury lead to 13-1 with 9:31 to go in the contest. The Bobcats answered on a goal from Madie Donovan with 1:55 remaining to bring the final score to 13-2. 
NOTES
  • With her four tallies in today's win, Earley moves into seventh place in the Middlebury record books with 171 career goals.
  • Erica Barr recorded three draw controls during the victory, bringing her career total to 171 and moving her into fourth place in program history.
  • Middlebury leads the all-time series with Bates 34-5 and the Panthers have won 12 of the last 13 meetings between the two programs.
