Top-Ranked Women’s Lacrosse Pulls Away From #17 Trinity

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team led 17th-ranked Trinity 4-2 after one quarter, but the Panthers outscored the Bantams 6-0 in the second quarter to pull away for an 18-5 victory on Saturday. The win was highlighted by a season-best 10 saves from goalie Annie Enrietto, as the Panthers notched their 10th-straight victory overall and 22nd-consecutive road triumph.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury raced out to a quick lead, scoring three times in the opening 1:35 of the first quarter. Highlighting the spurt was a free-position goal by Hope Shue, as Shue found the top-right corner of the net with just 16 seconds expired.
  • Trinity moved to within 3-1 on a player-up tally with 10:30 left by Lily Ives, before Shue answered 1:17 later for a three-goal advantage.
  • The Bantams turned up the offensive pressure over the next few minutes, but Enrietto tallied three saves, including one on a free-position attempt, to help preserve the 4-1 lead.
  • The hosts scored with 2:56 remaining when Grace Denious found space just under the crossbar to bring Trinity to within 4-2.
  • The visitors took control of the contest in the decisive second quarter, outscoring the Bantams 6-0 in the stanza with five free-position tallies and limited Trinity to just four total shots.
  • With 42 seconds left before halftime, Shue posted her fifth goal of the game on a shot across her body into the bottom-left corner for a 10-2 advantage heading into the break.
  • Middlebury recorded five of the six goals in the third quarter. Anna Spehr scored twice including a quick-stick tally with under a minute to go on a pinpoint pass from Jane Earley for a 15-3 lead.
  • The Panthers were never challenged in the final quarter, as Earley, Addy Hayman and Caroline Messer each found the back of the net for the final 18-5 score.
NOTES
  • Hayman's fourth-quarter goal was her first of the season.
  • Shue, Earley and Messer paced a balanced Middlebury offense that saw nine different players score a goal. Shue finished with five goals and a pair of assists, while Earley had six points (3G, 3A) and Messer tallied four points (3G, 1A).
  • Earley collected a game-high eight draw controls, giving her 154 for her career. That total moves her into fifth place in the Middlebury career record books. She also has 208 career points (159G, 49A), just one point away from moving into the top-10 places in program history.
  • Enrietto pushed her career record to a perfect 21-0 with the victory.
  • The Panthers and Bantams met for the 44th time with Middlebury owning a 27-17 advantage, having won each of the last eight games.
The Panthers remain on the road for their spring break trip with a Monday afternoon contest at Lebanon Valley scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
