Softball Opens Season With Wins Over Farmingdale State and Ohio Wesleyan

The Middlebury softball opened its season with victories over Farmingdale State and Ohio Wesleyan on the first day of its spring trip in Clermont, Florida. The Panthers raced out to early leads in both contests and did not look back, cruising to a 12-1 win over the Rams, before shutting out The Battling Bishops 9-0.

HIGHLIGHTS VS. FARMINGDALE STATE
  • Middlebury quickly took a 5-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. A single from Kristyn Carroll plated both Abby Santis and McKenna Lont, before Carroll later scored on an error. Jewel Ashbrook roped a double into center field to score Tori Papaleo and Cece Ziegler, giving the Panthers a 5-0 lead.
  • Middlebury tacked on another run in the fourth when Ziegler launched a solo home run to increase the lead to 6-0.
  • The Rams answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Priscilla Rivera singled and Samatha Stolfi doubled to left to bring her home, making the score 6-1.
  • The Panthers continued to apply pressure in the fifth inning. Carroll blasted a double to deep center which scored Megan Fox, and Papeleo delivered a single up the middle to drive in Carroll and give Middlebury an 8-1 lead.
  • The Panthers added four more runs to seal the game in the top of the sixth inning. Santis crushed a three-run homer to left center, before a triple by Carroll drove in the final run for the 12-1 triumph.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. OHIO WESLEYAN
  • Middlebury carried its momentum into the second game of the day, jumping out to an early 3-0 edge. Lont and Santis each singled to left before Fox blasted a three-run homer to put the Panthers in front.
  • In the second inning, Middlebury continued to add to its advantage. With the bases loaded, Lont smacked a double just inside the fence in center field to drive in two runs before Santis singled to clear the bases and make it 7-0. Carroll later singled to right and Fox tallied her fourth and fifth RBI's of the day by delivering another base hit to give the Panthers a 9-0 edge.
NOTES
  • Fox batted in a career-high five runs against Ohio Wesleyan.
  • Lont was dominant in the circle, allowing just three hits in five innings in the second game of the day.
  • This was the first time that Middlebury and The Bishops had squared off, while the Panthers evened the all-time series with Farmingdale State at 1-1 with the victory.
Middlebury continues play at THE Spring Games on Sunday with contests against Union and Keuka.
