Softball Improves to 4-0 With Triumphs Over Union & Keuka

The Middlebury softball team improved to 4-0 with triumphs over Union (N.Y.) and Keuka on Sunday at THE Spring Games. The Panthers utilized a big fourth inning to down the Dutchwomen 12-10, before edging the Wolves 3-2 in the day's second game.

HIGHLIGHTS VS. UNION
  • Union took advantage of a Middlebury miscue to score a pair of early runs in its first at-bat before a single to right center by Autumn Duff brought in Amanda Granato for the 3-0 lead.
  • Middlebury cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first when Megan Fox singled to drive home Abby Santis and McKenna Lont to make it 4-2.
  • The Dutchwomen added a pair of runs in the second and three in the third to take a commanding 9-2 advantage.
  • The Panthers got one run back in the bottom of the third when Kristyn Carroll touched home on a sacrifice fly by Cece Ziegler.
  • Middlebury cracked the game open in the bottom of the fourth. Jordyn Johnson, Santis and Carroll each singled to collectively bring home four runs. Santis and Carroll later touched home when Fox smacked a double to center before Ziegler plated Fox with a triple to right field for the 11-9 edge.
  • Union made it a one-score game (11-10) in the top of the fifth, but Carroll blasted a single to right field to score Santis in the bottom of the fifth to secure the 12-10 victory.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. KEUKA
  • The Wolves got off to a quick start, tallying a pair of runs in the first inning. Kelsey Mohl doubled to left field to drive in Helena Hill, before McKenna DeMoney scampered home on a passed ball for the early 2-0 lead.
  • The Panthers tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Lont singled and later touched home on a single by Fox. Following that play, Fox and Santis each stole a base to put themselves in scoring position, and a ground out by Ziegler brought in Santis.
  • The game was won in the top of the seventh. Ziegler led off and reached first on an error, before advancing to third on a sacrifice fly by Tori Papaleo. Lizzie Hannafey reached on a throwing error, allowing Ziegler to cross home plate for the 3-2 victory.
  • The Panthers retired the lineup in order during Keuka's half of the inning to secure the 3-2 triumph.
NOTES
  • Carroll earned the win in game one, allowing just two hits while striking out three over the final trio of innings. She also had two runs on three hits and a trio of RBI during game two.
  • Middlebury leveled the series with Keuka 1-1 in the second all-time meeting, while claiming its third-straight victory over Union in the team's 30th contest.
