The Middlebury women's basketball team used a quick start to race past Wesleyan 61-47. The Panthers took the lead for good midway through the first quarter and never looked back, snapping the Cardinals' three-game winning streak.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury's Alexa Mustafaj tallied six of the first eight points, giving the Panthers a 6-2 lead at the 6:17 mark.
- Wesleyan slowly chipped away at the deficit, taking its first and only advantage of the game (8-7) on a three from Olivia Quinn with 4:14 remaining.
- Augusta Dixon closed out the first quarter for the Panthers, rattling off six-unanswered points to make it 13-8 at the break.
- With 4:12 to go in the half, a charity toss by Cardinal Lena Benway cut the Middlebury lead to one (15-14).
- Back-to-back three-pointers by Mustafaj and Bethany Lucey pushed the Panther advantage out to 21-14 with 2:09 to go.
- Brooke Guiffre responded with a shot from beyond the arc to make it 21-17, but a layup by Mustafaj with five ticks left on the clock gave Middlebury a 23-17 lead at the intermission.
- The teams traded the initial four baskets over the opening 3:05, before Wesleyan went on a 6-0 run to knot the contest 27-27 midway through the third stanza.
- The Panthers answered with an 11-2 run, capped by a three from Reagan McDonald with 1:42 to go.
- Quinn responded with a three of their own, but charity tosses by Mustafaj and McDonald gave Middlebury a 40-32 edge heading into the final quarter.
- Trailing 48-37 with 7:30 remaining, Wesleyan rattled off seven-unanswered points, cutting the deficit to four (48-44).
- That was as close as the Cardinals would get for the rest of the game, as the Panthers eased to the 61-47 victory.
NOTES
- With 28 points tonight, Mustafaj now has 453 on the season, moving her into fifth on Middlebury's single-season list. She also owns the fourth spot with 476 points in her rookie campaign.
- Dixon tallied 10 points and grabbed 11 boards to record her fourth double-double of the season.
- During the win, McDonald tallied her 100th career three-point field goal.
- Tonight's contest was the 36th meeting between Middlebury and Wesleyan, with the hosts owning a 22-14 mark in the series.
The Panthers remain at Pepin Gymnasium, hosting #11 Trinity at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
