Men’s Basketball Cruises Past Skidmore 69-51

The Middlebury men's basketball team stifled Skidmore with strong defense coupled with a 28-5 run to close the first half, never looking back to cruise past the Thoroughbreds 69-51 on Friday night.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The teams traded points over the opening four minutes of the initial half. Leading 6-5, Skidmore used a 5-2 burst, capped by a three-pointer from Hakeem Daphnis, to take a 11-7 lead with 14:14 to go. 
  • Trailing 14-9, the Panthers exploded  behind a 19-1 run that lasted 7:05 to a 28-15 advantage. The spurt was highlighted by a pair of three-point field goals from Tristan Joseph and seven points by Evan Flaks.
  • Middlebury kept its foot on the gas to end the opening half, extending its lead to 19 (37-18) on a pull-up jumper by Flaks with 2:04 remaining. 
  • The Panthers held the Thoroughbreds to just four points over the final 4:32 of the first stanza to take a 37-19 lead into the halftime break.
  • Middlebury picked up where it left off to begin the second half. Charley Moore tallied six of the Panthers' eight points to open the frame to increase the advantage to 45-25 with 16:05 to go.
  • With 3:55 left in the contest, a layup by Edward Witherington gave Middlebury its biggest lead of the evening (65-41). The Panthers would not be challenged from that point on, easing to the 69-51 triumph.
NOTES
  • Moore registered a career-best 10 points in the win.
  • Flaks poured in a season-high 17 points during the victory.
  • David Brennan recorded 20 rebounds for the third time this season.
  • The programs played for the 41st time with the Panthers holding a 27-14 advantage in the all-time series. Middlebury has won seven in a row in the series and 17 of the last 18 contests.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday when they travel to face Stevens at 1:00 p.m.
