Men’s Basketball Outlasts Stevens 84-77 In Overtime

The Middlebury men's basketball team outlasted Stevens 84-77 in overtime, claiming its third victory in a row. The Panthers handed the Ducks just their second loss of the season and snapped their seven game winning streak. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Trailing 7-6 at the 16:48 mark, Stevens went on a 6-0 run, capped by a layup from Stephen Braunstein to take a 12-7 lead.
  • The Ducks continued to increase their advantage, moving ahead 21-13 on a layup from Jack Spellman with 11:11 elapsed.
  • Middlebury responded, rattling off a 12-0 burst to storm into a 25-21 lead. The run was highlighted by back-to-back buckets from Lamine Cisse.
  • The Panthers continued to pull away, making it a six-point advantage (29-23) on a layup by David Brennan with 4:53 to go in the opening stanza.
  • Stevens closed the half with a 5-2 burst, as Xander Singh converted on a layup with 1:03 remaining to make it 31-28 at the intermission. 
  • The teams traded points to begin the second frame, before a layup from Singh cut the Middlebury advantage to just one (43-42) midway through the stanza.
  • The Panthers answered with a 9-3 run over the next three minutes, taking a 54-45 lead on a two-point jump shot from Noah Osher.
  • The Ducks would not go away and countered with a 13-2 burst to take a one-point edge (57-56). The span was capped on a pair of free throws by Spellman with 3:08 left in the contest.
  • Trailing 63-61, Tristan Joseph raced up the floor and sank a reverse layup with three seconds left to knot the score at 63 points apiece and send the game to overtime.
  • Middlebury wasted no time grabbing the lead in the extra stanza, rushing out to a 73-65 edge on a decisive 10-2 spurt over the first 2:37 of the frame. The run was capped by a shot from beyond the arc by Cisse.
  • Stevens recorded seven of the next 11 points to cut the deficit to five (77-72) on a three by Ritchie Machado with a minute to go, but the Panthers converted on free throws down the stretch to secure the 84-77 overtime victory. 
NOTES
  • Osher poured in a career-high 34 points during the win, while Cisse posted a career-best 13. 
  • The Panthers and the Ducks played for just the fifth time in men's basketball, with Middlebury now claiming four of the last five meetings. 
  • This is the second overtime game that the Panthers have taken part in this season, winning both.
Middlebury is idle until December 29, when it travels to Brandeis for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
