Men’s Basketball Holds Off Plattsburgh State 80-76 In Overtime

The Middlebury men's basketball team utilized a late run in overtime to edge Plattsburgh State 80-76 in midweek action. David Brennan posted a career-high 28 rebounds during the triumph, marking the most in Division III this season.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Trailing 5-4 after 1:45 of action, the Panthers rattled off a 9-0 spurt highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from Tristan Joseph to move into an eight-point edge (13-5) with 4:13 elapsed.
  • The Cardinals responded with an 11-2 burst of their own to regain the lead, pulling ahead 16-15 on a step-back jumper from Kevin Tabb with 11:22 to go.
  • The teams continued to trade baskets throughout the first half. With Plattsburgh State leading 28-25 with 7:33 to go, Middlebury owned the remainder of the half, going on a 13-4 run to close the half with a 38-32 advantage. Noah Osher contributed five points during the spurt.
  • The Cardinals opened the second stanza by tallying eight of the first 12 points. Franklin Infante nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to two (42-40) with 2:44 gone.
  • Osher answered by outscoring Plattsburgh State 11-6 over the next 3:23, capped by a shot from beyond the arc to give Middlebury a 53-46 lead with 13:39 to go.
  • The Panthers continued to extend their edge, pushing the advantage to 10 (64-54) on a floater from Joseph with 7:38 left in the contest.
  • The Cardinals would not go away and manufactured a 14-5 run over the next 6:11 to pull within one (69-68) on a three-pointer from Tabb with 22 ticks left. 
  • Joseph split a pair of charity tosses with 18 seconds to go to give Middlebury a 70-68 edge, but Jeremiah Smith leveled the contest at 70-70 on a layup with nine seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
  • With the score knotted at 74-74 with 46 seconds to go in overtime, Kuba Cwalina took over, scoring the next four points to give the Panthers a 78-74 edge. Joseph sealed the outcome with a layup, before a two-pointer from Infante made it an 80-76 final score.
NOTES
  • Joseph tallied a career-best 25 points in the overtime victory.
  • Brennan recorded his 11th career double-double, scoring 11 points to go along with his 28 boards.
  • Osher poured in 26 points during the win, bringing his career total to 880 and posted a  career-high six assists.
  • Middlebury recorded 66 rebounds as a team, marking the fourth-highest single-game total in the program's history.  
  • The programs met for the 36th time with the Panthers holding a 22-14 advantage in the all-time series. Middlebury has won eight of the last nine meetings.
The Panthers return to Pepin Gymnasium on Friday night when they take on Skidmore at 7:30 p.m.
