Women’s Basketball Utilizes Strong Second Half to Down Union 68-50

The Middlebury women's basketball team opened the week with a 68-50 at Union on Monday night. Alexa Mustafaj led the way for the Panthers, pouring in 36 points, including six shots from beyond the arc in the triumph.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Chargers began the game on a 7-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Jenna Forman.
  • The Panthers took control for the remainder of the frame, responding with 15 unanswered points, capped by a layup from Bethany Lucey, to take a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Union opened the second stanza with a 9-3 burst to pull to within two (18-16) with 7:55 remaining in the half. Kennedy Clark contributed five points during the run.
  • The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter. Mustafaj converted on a driving layup with 2:02 left to give Middlebury a one-point lead (29-28), before a free throw from Jelena Perovic and a pair of foul shots by Clark with seven seconds to go gave the Garnet Chargers a two point halftime edge (31-29). 
  • Gabby Stuart gave Middlebury the lead to begin the third quarter with a 5-0 run of her own. The guard drained a three before knocking down a pair of charity tosses to put the Panthers ahead 34-31.
  • Middlebury continued to extend its advantage, taking a six-point lead (42-36) on a layup from Katie Hollensteiner with 2:16 remaining. 
  • Union answered with a 3-1 run to cut the deficit to four heading into the final frame. 
  • Leading 43-41, Mustafaj rattled off eight unanswered points over the first 1:54 of the frame to give the Panthers a double-digit lead (51-41). 
  • Middlebury did not look back from there, outscoring the Garnet Chargers 17-9 over the final eight minutes of play to ease to the 68-50 victory.
NOTES
  • Mustafaj finished two points shy of her career high with 36. The Panther has recorded double-figure point totals in 53 of 55 career games.
  • With 36 points today, Mustafaj moved into fifth place on Middlebury's all-time scoring list with 1,181 career points.
  • The programs met for the 31st time with Middlebury holding a 21-10 advantage. The Panthers have claimed each of the last two matchups.
Middlebury is back in action on Friday when it faces Babson at 8:00 p.m. to open the Williams Shooting Touch Classic.
