Women’s Basketball Downed 56-45 By Babson

The Middlebury women's basketball team was downed by Babson 56-45 in the opening game of the Williams Shooting Touch Classic.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Beavers had the hot hand throughout the entirety of the first quarter, as they raced out to a commanding 14-2 advantage after 10 minutes of action. 
  • The Panthers exploded out of the break, rattling off a 7-0 run, cutting the deficit to five (14-9) on a three pointer by Alexa Mustafaj with 8:19 left in the half.
  • Babson responded with seven unanswered points of its own over the next 3:52, as a jumper by Allessia Carlo gave the hosts a 21-9 edge with 4:27 remaining. 
  • Middlebury would not go away, outscoring the Beavers 9-5 over the remainder of the stanza, heading into the intermission trailing by eight (26-18).
  • The teams traded points throughout the initial five minutes of the third frame, before  a layup from Kale Tornwini pulled the Panthers within six (32-26).
  • From there, Babson closed the stanza with a 6-2 burst to take a 38-28 edge with one quarter left to play. 
  • The Beavers continued to extend their advantage during the final frame, taking a 13-point lead (47-34) on a pair of free throws by Kelly Walsh with 6:11 remaining.
  • Middlebury continued to fight, closing to within nine (47-38) on a pair of charity tosses from Mustafaj, but that was as close as the Panthers would get as Babson hung on for the 56-45 triumph.
NOTES
  • Mustafaj tallied 15 points during tonight's game to increase her streak of double-digit point totals in 54 of 56 career contests.
  • The programs faced off for just the fifth time with Babson holding a 4-1 edge.
Middlebury faces Wheaton (Mass.) in the second game of the Williams Shooting Touch Classic on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
