Women’s Basketball Falls to Springfield 56-46

The Middlebury women's basketball team closed out the Middlebury Tip-Off Classic with a 56-46 loss to Springfield on Saturday afternoon.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The opening three minutes of the contest were tightly-contested. Trailing 5-4, the Pride rattled off a 5-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Jaelen Daubon to move ahead by four (9-5).
  • The Panthers responded, closing the gap to one (12-11) on a pair of charity tosses from Alexa Mustafaj with 1:42 to go. 
  • Springfield answered by ending the opening frame with back-to-back threes to take an 18-11 lead into the break.
  • The Pride picked up where they left off, tallying the first four points of the second quarter to increase the advantage to 11 (22-11).
  • Middlebury would not go away, and went on an 11-2 runover the next 4:03, pulling to within two (24-22) on a jumper by Mustafaj.
  •  Two late free throws gave Springfield a 26-22 edge at halftime.
  • The Panthers began the third stanza with strong defense, causing five turnovers in the opening 3:30 of action. During that span, Middlebury went on an 8-0 run to storm ahead 30-26, highlighted by two layups from Brooke Collins.
  • The Pride responded with an 8-1 run of their own, and a pair of free throws from Angela Czeremcha gave the visitors a 34-31 edge heading into the final frame..
  • Trailing 39-31 with 7:01 remaining, the Panthers cut the deficit to three (39-36) on a triple from Gabby Stuart and two free throws by Mustafaj.
  • That was as close as Middlebury would get as Springfield was able to continue to make shots, eventually pulling away for the final 56-46 scoreline.
NOTES
  • Mustafaj led all scorers with 24 points on the evening. This is the 34th time that she has eclipsed the 20-point mark and the 50th time she has scored double-digits.
  • The programs faced off for the 14th time with the series being split evenly 7-7.
The Panthers travel to Vermont State University Castleton face the Spartans on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
