#1 Middlebury Eases Past William Smith 7-0 In NCAA Second Round

The top-ranked Middlebury field hockey team cruised past William Smith by a 7-0 score on Saturday in a regional hosted by Messiah. The victory was the 30th-consecutive triumph for the Panthers away from Peter Kohn Field dating back to the 2019 season.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Amy Griffin broke the scoreless tie following a penalty corner. Lilly Branka fed a nice pass across the goalmouth to Griffin who rifled a shot into the back of the cage with 10:32 elapsed.
  • The Panthers nearly doubled their advantage two minutes later, but a bid from the right post by Katie George was saved by the pads of William Smith goalie Kristen McCormick.
  • Middlebury pushed the edge to 3-0 with a pair of goals 1:39 apart in the second quarter. George redirected a shot by Griffin on the left post, while Hanna Medwar tapped in a loose ball on the right side for the three-goal lead.
  • Griffin made it a 4-0 advantage with 17 seconds left before halftime, working through several defenders before burying a shot into the lower-right corner of the cage.
  • Audrey Lazar tucked a penalty-stroke shot into the left side of the cage just 1:33 into the third quarter, before George redirected a pass from Medwar for a 6-0 Panther advantage just under three minutes later.
  • Middlebury added a seventh goal after a penalty corner when Grace Keefe posted her first tally of the season on a blast from just inside the arc for the final 7-0 score.
NOTES
  • KK Newton played the first three quarters in goal for the Panthers without recording a save, while Izzy Redzic logged the final 15 minutes.
  • George scored twice and added an assist, pushing her over the 150-point total for her career with 153 (69G, 15A). That point effort ranks sixth in the career record books.
  • Griffin tied her season-high point total with five (2G, 1A). The helper gives her 34 for her career.
  • The shutout was the 11th of the season for Middlebury, matching the 2018 team for second in program history.
  • The Panthers have scored 99 goals this season, tying for third in the single-season record books.
  • Middlebury and William Smith played for just the fourth time in field hockey, with each taking place in the NCAA Tournament and the Panthers owning a 3-1 edge.
The Panthers advance to Sunday's regional final at 1:00 p.m. and will play the winner of Saturday's second contest between the fifth-ranked Falcons and #13 SUNY Cortland.
