Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#1 Field Hockey Rushes Past #7 Tufts 6-0

The #1 Middlebury field hockey team scored four goals in the opening half and did not look back, rushing past #7 Tufts 6-0 during a rainy Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. With the victory, the Panthers locked up the NESCAC regular-season title and the #1 seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament. Prior to the game, the Panthers honored seniors Meg Shelburne, Audrey Lazar, Sadie LeStage, KK Newton, Katie George, S.K. Hurlock and Charlotte Marks.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury got on the board after 3:38 of action. Amy Griffin found the back of the cage with a penalty stroke that rippled the right side netting, giving the hosts a 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers nearly scored a second at the 10:45 mark. Following a penalty corner, a shot ricocheted to Lilly Branka in front of the net but her flicked effort fell just wide of the right post.
  • With 14 seconds left in the opening frame, Griffin tallied her second goal of the day. The junior received a pass from LeStage at the top of the arc and rifled a reverse shot through a crowd and into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-0.
  • Middlebury took a 3-0 advantage at the 23:50 mark. Branka fired a pass into the goalmouth from the right side and Caroline Segal tipped it past Jumbo goalie Lydia Eastburn and into the cage.
  • The Panthers continued to apply pressure and scored again 3:18 later. George drove toward the goal and saw her initial effort denied by Eastburn but pounced on the rebound and slipped her second shot home for a 4-0 lead at the halftime break.
  • Middlebury stormed into a 5-0 advantage after 1:24 in the second half. Lazar broke away down the right side and knocked a pass across the goal to George who was all alone to tap the ball in at the back post for the five-goal edge.
  • The Panthers looked to score again after 33 seconds in the final quarter. Segal burst through and was one-on-one, but Eastburn came rushing out to deny the bid. On the ensuing penalty corner, Eastburn came up with another diving save to thwart a close-range shot.
  • Middlebury did take a 6-0 lead with 1:30 left. A blast from the top of the arc found George at the back post and she one-timed a pass to Lazar who slipped her shot into the corner to bring the final score to 6-0.
NOTES
  • The Panther defense was superb this afternoon, limiting Tufts to just one shot and one penalty corner.
