Women’s Basketball Knocks Off #15 Amherst 47-45

The Middlebury women's basketball team upset 15th-ranked Amherst 47-45 on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers improve to 2-0 in NESCAC play and snap an 18-game losing streak to the Mammoths.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury rushed out to an early 8-0 lead, capped by a three-pointer from Gabby Stuart at the 5:17 mark.
  • The Panthers continued to add to their lead throughout the opening stanza, opening up a 18-4 advantage following an Augusta Dixon jumpshot with under a minute to play.
  • Amherst slowly chipped away at the deficit throughout the second quarter. The Mammoths went on a 9-1 run spanning 3:35 of play with Kori Barach sinking a shot from beyond the arc to make the score 23-22 with 4:04 left before the half .
  • Trailing by one (25-24), Amherst ended the first half with four-unanswered points to take a 28-25 edge into the break.
  • The Mammoths stretched their advantage to five (32-27) at the 7:32 mark on a jumper from Barach.
  • With 4:35 remaining in the third quarter, Bethany Lucey recorded an old-fashioned three-point play to bring the Panthers within two (34-32).
  • Middlebury began the final stanza with jump shots from Alexa Mustafaj and Emily Downer to tie the game 37-37.
  • With 6:27 to go, the Panthers took the lead for the first time since late in the second quarter, as Mustafaj knocked down a floating layup to take a one-point edge (41-40).
  • The game was knotted at 45-45 with less than 30 seconds left until Stuart nailed a long two-pointer.
  • Amherst had the opportunity for the final shot, but a steal by Mustafaj sealed the upset victory for the Panthers.   
NOTES
  • Defense played a key role for the Panthers in the victory. The team leads the NESCAC and ranks 12th nationally in team defense (48.5 points per game).
  • Middlebury has held opponents to 45 points or less in seven games this season.
  • Mustafaj poured in a game-high 19 points in the win, continuing her streak of recording double-figure point totals in 37 of her 39 career games.
