Panthers Utilize Strong First Quarter In NESCAC-Opening Win Over Hamilton

The Middlebury women's basketball team outscored Hamilton 23-9 in Friday's opening quarter against Hamilton. The Continentals mounted a second-half comeback bid, but the Panthers knocked down free throws in the final minutes for a 64-56 victory in the NESCAC opener for both teams.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury scored the game's initial eight points, taking an 8-0 lead on a jumper from Emily Downer with 6:55 left in the first stanza.
  • The hosts continued their impressive start, pushing the advantage to 14 (16-2) on a three-point field goal by Bethany Lucey just over three minutes later.
  • The lead grew to as many as 16 (23-7) on a three by Gabby Stuart. 
  • A layup from Hamilton's Maria Mercado Rengel with 42 seconds left cut the deficit to 23-9 after one quarter.
  • The Continentals opened the second session with a 7-1 run to pull within eight (24-16) capped by a layup from Emma Sehring with 5:39 remaining.
  • The Panthers answered with a 10-2 spurt to end the half, fueled by four points each from Alexa Mustafaj and Calie Messina, for a 34-18 lead at the break.
  • The teams traded baskets early in the third quarter, as Middlebury grabbed its largest advantage of the contest at 41-22 on a jumper from Mustafaj with 7:27 remaining.
  • Trailing by 16 points with 3:11 left, Hamilton recorded a 10-1 run to end the quarter and cut the deficit to 48-41.
  • The Panthers maintained a slight edge for much of the fourth stanza before the Continentals made it a 59-54 contest with 1:04 left on a layup from Emily Hall.
  • Mustafaj knocked down five of her six free-throw attempts over the final 1:04 to secure the 64-56 victory.

  • Mustafaj finished with 21 points for Middlebury, giving her 20 or more points in nine of the last 10 games.
  • Lucey tied her season high with nine rebounds.
  • Stuart matched her season-best output with a trio of made shots from beyond the arc.
  • The contest marked the 37th meeting between the Panthers and Continentals with Middlebury owning a 21-16 edge. The Panthers have won five-straight matchups and seven of the last eight in the series.
