Women’s Basketball Edges St. Lawrence 70-61

The Middlebury women's basketball team utilized a strong opening half and held off a fourth-quarter comeback bid for a 70-61 victory over host St. Lawrence. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The visitors raced out to an early lead in the first quarter, grabbing a 10-3 advantage on a jumper by Augusta Dixon with 6:29 left.
  • The Saints manufactured an 11-4 run over the next 2:16, cutting the deficit to 14-12 on a three-point field goal by Jackie Malley.
  • The Panthers tallied the final seven points of the quarter, including five from Calie Messina, for a 21-12 advantage at the end of the first stanza.
  • St. Lawrence cut the Middlebury lead to eight (23-15) on a free throw by Caelan McHarney just over a minute into the second quarter.
  • The Panthers responded with a 17-6 run, highlighted by a trio of threes from Reagan McDonald, for their largest lead of the opening half (40-21) at the 2:25 mark.
  • The Saints tallied the final five points of the frame as Middlebury took a 40-26 edge into halftime.
  • St. Lawrence continued that momentum out of the locker room, reeling off a 9-3 spurt to pull within eight (43-35) on a jumper by Olivia Middleton. 
  • The Saints continued to chip away over the next few minutes, moving to within seven (49-42) on a three by Malley with 1:25 left.
  • A basket by Dixon pushed the visitor lead back to 51-42 headed to the fourth.
  • St. Lawrence continued to battle throughout the final quarter, cutting the deficit to four (60-56) on two charity tosses from Middleton with 3:04 remaining.
  • The Panther lead wavered between four and seven points, as two free throws by Malley brought the hosts to within five (66-61) with 47 seconds left.
  • Alexa Mustafaj canned three of four charity tosses to close out the 70-61 win.
NOTES
  • Dixon tied her career high with 17 points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
  • McDonald finished with 11 points and three makes from beyond the arc, giving her 99 made threes for her career.
  • Mustafaj finished with 22 points, giving her 12 games this season with at least 20 points.
  • Over her last four games, Mustafaj has shot 34-36 at the free-throw line.
  • The contest was the 13th meeting with the Saints and the first since 2004-05, as Middlebury now holds an 8-5 advantage.
