Women’s Basketball Comeback Bid Falls Just Short At Colby

A fourth quarter rally from the Middlebury women's basketball team was not enough to overcome Colby, as the Mules hung on for a 63-59 victory on Saturday afternoon. The loss was the first in conference play for the Panthers.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Colby stormed out to a15-3 lead. Caroline Smith contributing11 points over the opening 6:03.
  • The Mules continued their hot shooting in the second quarter, beginning the period by scoring five of the first eight points to take a 22-10 advantage. 
  • At the 5:28 mark, Reagan McDonald connected on an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the lead back down to single-digits (22-13). 
  • Colby put together a 7-0 spurt over the next 2:25 to push the advantage to 16 (29-13).
  • The Mules continued their strong first half play, and took a 34-19 edge into the halftime break.
  • Trailing 42-31 with 2:44 remaining, Alexa Mustafaj scored two layups while McDonald contributed six points, to cut the deficit to eight (49-41) heading into the final frame.
  • With 1:17 elapsed, Calie Messina drained a three-pointer to cut the Panther deficit to five (51-46).
  • Trailing 60-52, the Panthers rattled off seven unanswered points, capped by a Brooke Collins layup to make it a one point game (60-59) with 16 seconds to go.
  • Middlebury was forced to foul and Colby knocked down its charity stripe tosses to secure the 63-59 win.
NOTES
  • McDonald recorded a season-high 21 points during the contest.
  • With 18 points today, Mustafaj continues her streak of scoring double-figure point totals in 37 of her 39 career games.
  • Messina registered a career-best 10 points.
