Volleyball Falls To Amherst In Four Sets

The Middlebury volleyball team split the first two sets with Amherst by identical 25-19 scores, but the Mammoths claimed the third (25-21) and fourth stanzas (25-16) for the 3-1 victory.  

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The teams traded points for much of the first set, with Amherst grabbing a 16-13 lead on a kill by Charlotte Rasmussen.
  • The Panthers tallied six of the following nine points, taking a 19-18 edge on a kill by Ava Tuccio
  • The Mammoths scored the next six points to win the 25-19 opening set.
  • Ahead 7-6 in the second frame, the Panthers rattled off a 7-3 run for a 14-9 lead on an Amherst attacking error.
  • The Mammoths cut the deficit to one (15-14), but a quick 5-1 Middlebury spurt, highlighted by a pair of kills from Lexi Linafelter, pushed the advantage to 20-15. 
  • The Panthers maintained their lead, tying the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 set victory. 
  • A service ace from Britt Lange gave Middlebury a 6-3 early lead in the third stanza. 
  • The Mammoths quickly rattled off a 6-1 run for a 9-7 advantage, before growing the lead as many as six (18-12) on a block from Rasmussen and Caroline Tilton. 
  • Middlebury battled back to even the set at 19-19 on a Mammoth attacking miscue, but Amherst tallied six of the final eight points for a 2-1 advantage.
  • In the fourth set trailing 13-4, the Panthers sliced the deficit to six (14-8) on a kill by Katie Kraczkowsky, but it wasn't enough as the Mammoths cruised to the four-set victory. 

NOTES

  • Linafelter posted a career-best 14 kills for the Panthers.
  • Lange dug up a career-high 23 balls in the contest.
  • Gabbie O'Toole continues her streak of 20 assists or more in every match for her career, finishing with a season-best 37 in a four-set contest following her 33-assist output on Friday.
