Middlebury Outlasts Hamilton During NESCAC Sweep

The Middlebury volleyball team took advantage of sizable runs during all three sets, posting a NESCAC 3-0 sweep against Hamilton. The Panthers improve to a perfect 4-0 record in three-set contests this fall. 

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Middlebury moved out to a 6-2 advantage in the opening set, highlighted by two kills from Lillian Caldwell.
  • Hamilton put together a 7-1 run for a 9-7 edge on a kill by Kate Carman.
  • After trading small leads, the Continentals secured a 24-22 edge on a solo block by Chiara Morley-McLaughlin. 
  • The Panthers recorded the final four points of the stanza, taking the initial set 26-24 on a Hamilton attacking error.
  • Knotted at 7-7 in the second set, Middlebury rattled off a 7-3 run on a kill down the line by Lexi Linafelter.
  • The Continentals chipped away at the deficit, pulling to within one (23-22) on a kill from Rylee Bergeron.
  • The Panthers posted the final two points of the stanza, capped on a kill from the middle by Linafelter for the two-set lead.
  • Middlebury quickly took a 9-1 advantage in the third frame on a solo block from Lucy Ambach and never looked back.
  • The Panthers continued to use the early momentum in their favor, increasing the lead to 14 (23-9) on a Hamilton hitting error.
  • The Continentals fought back with an 8-1 spurt, slicing the advantage to single digits (24-17) on a service ace by Pati Cerda.
  • Middlebury completed the sweep following a long rally between the teams, as Caldwell tallied the final point on a scrambling kill for the 25-17 decision.

NOTES

  • The Panthers improved to 22-4 in the all-time series against Hamilton, earning their fourth-straight win over the Continentals.
  • Caldwell posted a season-best 12 kills for Middlebury. 
  • Gabbie O'Toole tied a career high with 34 assists in a three-set match during the victory. O'Toole maintained her streak of recording at least 20 assists in every contest of her career.
