Volleyball Splits Saturday Doubleheader at Clarkson Invitational

The Middlebury volleyball team was edged in a five-set thriller against Stevens, but bounced back in the evening, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Nazareth. The Panthers went 2-1 over the course of the invitational.

HIGHLIGHTS VS. STEVENS
  • The first set featured strong play from both Middlebury and Stevens, with the squads exchanging runs throughout. The Panthers jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, bolstered by two kills from Laney Sullivan.
  • The Ducks countered with a 4-1 spurt of their own, cutting the deficit to one (9-8). 
  • Ahead 21-19,Middlebury closed out the first set with a 4-1 burst to make it 25-20.
  • Stevens responded in the second set, jumping out to a 7-2 lead.
  • The Ducks continued their strong play throughout the set, maintaining just under a 10-point advantage throughout, en route to a 25-17 win to tie the match at 1-1.
  • Stevens carried its momentum into the third set, rattling off five of the first six points for a 5-1 early edge.
  • The Panthers slowly chipped away at the deficit, before a service ace by Sullivan gave them a one-point edge (9-8).
  • Knotted at 16-16, Stevens went on to win nine of the 11 final points to secure the third set, highlighted by Patterson and Cleo Shannon, who had two kills apiece.
  • The fourth set was a back and forth affair, with neither team allowing their opponent to take a larger lead than two early on.
  • Leading by just one point (14-13), Middlebury went on a 5-1 run and never tailed again. Kills by Sullivan and Lillian Caldwell highlighted the burst, pushing the lead to 19-14. 
  • The Panthers closed out the set scoring six of the final seven points to secure the 25-16 victory and knot the match 2-2. 
  • The Ducks jumped out to a 5-3 advantage in the final stanza and never looked back.
  • Stevens put together the decisive 8-0 run en route to the 15-4 triumph to secure the 3-2 match victory.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. NAZARETH
  • Trailing 6-5 in the first set, Middlebury strung together a 5-0 run, accentuated by kills from Sullivan, Lucy Ambach, and Katie Kraczkowsky to make it 10-6. 
  • The Panthers continued to increase their lead throughout the opening set, and did not look back, cruising to a 25-13 victory.
  • With the Golden Flyers ahead 8-6 in the second set, Middlebury put five-straight points past their opposition, including two Sullivan service aces, making it 11-8.
  • Nazareth wouldn't go away, cutting the deficit to one (16-15) on a service ace by Rylie Loomis.
  • Middlebury responded with a 9-2 run to close out the set with a 25-17 final score.
  • The Panthers opened the third stanza with an impressive 5-0 run, which included two service aces by Gabbie O'Toole. 
  • Nazareth whittled away at the lead, knotting the set at 13-13. 
  • Middlebury would not be denied its straight sets victory however, ending the match on a 6-0 run, capped by a service ace from Kraczkowsky for the straight-sets sweep.
NOTES
  • In the match against Stevens, Sullivan set a career high for kills with 14 and Lexi Linafelter recorded a career-best 13 kills.
  • O'Toole continued her streak of recording at least 20 assists in each match she has played in.
