The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team (14-0, 9-0) raced out to a 5-1 lead at the end of Saturday's first quarter and never looked back during a 15-7 win at #19 Amherst (9-5, 4-5). The win marked the 39th-straight triumph for the visitors. The Panthers, who improved to 9-0 against ranked opponents this spring, close out the regular season on Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. contest at Williams.
Middlebury sprinted to a 4-0 advantage in the first nine minutes of the game.
Hope Shue started things with a free-position goal into the bottom-right corner with 12:15 left, while
Susan Rowley scored on a quick-stick shot a little less than two minutes later.
Jane Earley and
Erin Nicholas found the back of the Mammoth net over the ensuing minutes for Middlebury for a four-goal advantage. Amherst's Becky Kendall ended the Middlebury run with 4:34 remaining in the opening quarter, scoring on a pass from behind the goal from Ashley Tucker. Earley pushed the lead back to four (5-1) on a goal from the right side with 3:05 left in the quarter.
Anna Spehr scored on a driving shot to her right at the 11:21 mark of the second stanza, before Nicholas tallied nearly five minutes later for a 7-1 lead. The Mammoths scored the final two goals of the quarter, slicing the Panther lead to four (7-3) at halftime.
Out of the break,
Grace Getman bounced a shot into the goal on the first possession of the third quarter. Tallies from Nicholas and Earley over the next minute increased the Middlebury advantage to 10-3. Amherst answered with goals by Kendall and Marina Bevacqua to draw within five (10-5), before Earley and Rowley found the back of the net to push the lead to 12-5 headed to the final quarter.
Kelcey Dion got into the scoring column for the Panthers, working her way from behind the goal for her 15th marker of the spring with 12:11 remaining. Bevacqua made it a 13-7 game with 11:01 left, before Spehr and Earley concluded the scoring for the 15-7 final.
Earley paced the Middlebury attack with five goals, giving her an even 50 this season. Nicholas chipped in with three scores and
Lily Riseberg added four assists. Riseberg has 34 assists this season, tying her with two others in the program's single-season history. Earley posted a game-best nine draw controls, while
Kylie Wilson scooped up four groundballs.
Gina Driscoll (3-0) picked up the win with five saves for the Panthers.
Kendall and Bevacqua each finished with two goals, while Sydney Larsen chipped in with a goal and two helpers. Fiona Jones and Lauren Friedman both collected four draw controls. Caroline Stole suffered the loss for the Mammoths with eight saves during the first three quarters, while Caroline Fischer played the final stanza.
The Panthers held a 34-18 advantage in shots, a 22-12 advantage in rollers and a 16-10 edge in draw controls.
