Scoring Depth Carries #6 Panthers Past Babson

Middlebury had 10 players score at least once, as the sixth-ranked Panthers improved to 3-0 on the season with a 16-5 triumph at Babson on Sunday. Middlebury, which is riding a 28-game winning streak dating back to 2019, returns to NESCAC play on Saturday, hosting #19 Trinity at 12:00 p.m.

The Beavers (2-1) claimed an early lead on a free-position goal by Sophia McCann only 24 seconds into the game. Middlebury took over from that point, netting the final five tallies of the period. Jane Earley knotted the score 1-1 with 11:18 on the clock on a free-position attempt and Lily Riseberg gave the Panthers the advantage with a shot from the left side of the net just over a minute later. Anna Spehr's first collegiate tally made it 3-1 before Earley tacked on two more scores in the final 1:57 for a 5-1 cushion.

Middlebury's Kelcey Dion netted a goal 1:46 into the second period, off a nice feed from behind the cage from Riseberg. Erica Jayne used a high shot to pull the Beavers a goal closer (6-2) with 6:22 on the clock, but less than a minute later Madeline Riordan scooped up her own rebound and scored, sending the Panthers into the half with a 7-2 lead.

Grace Getman and Hope Shue continued Middlebury's offensive pressure in the third quarter, but Babson netted goals on consecutive possessions to close the gap to 9-4 with 10:34 on the scoreboard. The Panthers settled things down when Earley tucked a free-position shot under the crossbar, while Maggie Coughlin set up Riseberg for her second marker of the game with 7:54 remaining. Addy Hayman increased the lead to 12-4 with her first score as a Panther and Emma Inouye took advantage of an eight-meter attempt for a nine-goal lead.

In the final frame, Erin Nicholas tallied twice in the first five minutes, including a nice power move to the net on the second score, before Getman closed out the scoring for the Panthers with her second of the contest. Babson's Courtney Kaskey picked up the game's final goal with 1:09 left to play for the 16-5 final.

Earley finished with four goals and currently sits at 99 career points (77G, 22A), while Getman and Riseberg each tallied twice and had an assist. Nicholas had a well-rounded effort with two goals, three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Grace Mumford posted three caused turnovers and scooped up three ground balls. Erica Barr chipped in with five draw controls. In goal, Annie Enrietto picked up her third-straight victory.

Kaskey was the lone Babson player to score more than once with a pair, while Clare Connolly finished with a game-high seven draw controls. Goalie Kathleen Murphy finished with nine saves.
