The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team (2-0, 2-0) utilized a nine-goal first quarter and cruised to a 14-6 NESCAC victory Saturday at Connecticut College (2-1, 0-1). The Panthers have scored in double figures in each of the last 21 contests and have won 14 straight on the road. Middlebury is back in action Sunday when it travels to Babson for a 1:00 p.m. start.
The Panthers grabbed an early lead, rattling off the first nine goals of the contest to possess a 9-0 advantage after one quarter.
Lily Riseberg struck first at the 13:22 mark, before a pair of goals from
Jane Earley made it 3-0 less than five minutes into action. Tallies from
Niki Mormile and
Hope Shue extended the lead to 5-0, before a marker from
Madeline Riordan gave Middlebury a 6-0 advantage. A free-position bouncing goal from Earley increased the lead to 7-0, before scores from
Erin Nicholas and Earley moved the Panther lead to 9-0 after one quarter.
In the second stanza, Riseberg recorded her second goal of the game on a quick-stick attempt into the top-left corner on an assist from
Anna Spehr with 10:15 left. The Camels got on the scoreboard just over a minute later when Emily Yorn drove from the left and bounced a shot into the Panther net with 9:12 remaining. Aine Downey ripped a shot into the upper-right corner just over the shoulder of Panther goalie
Annie Enrietto with 3:22 showing on the clock and moved the Camels to within 10-2 headed into the break.
Following halftime, Middlebury scored on its initial possession when Earley received a pass from Shue from point-blank range at 11:56 and put the ball in the net. Connecticut College cut the deficit to 11-3 when a shot from the left from Yorn trickled just over the goal line at the 5:37 mark.
In the fourth quarter, the hosts scored on their first time in the offensive zone when Emma Ognibene snuck a high shot past Enrietto. Connecticut College got to within six (11-5) when Kelly Wolin laced a quick shot into the top-right corner of the goal at the 12:16 mark. The Panthers responded with two goals from Riordan, followed by a free-position score by
Kelcey Dion covering 3:04 of play for a 14-5 lead. Downey tacked on her second goal of the afternoon with 2:34 left for the final 14-6 tally.
Earley tied her career high for the second-straight game with five goals in the victory. Riseberg finished with a pair of tallies and a game-high three assists, while Riordan posted three scores. Earley and
Erica Barr each won three draw controls, while
Kylie Wilson scooped up five groundballs. Enrietto made three saves in goal for the Panthers.
Downey scored two markers and added an assist for Connecticut College, while Yorn chipped in with two goals. Greta Panke won a game-best eight draw controls for the hosts. Violette Nidds recorded 13 saves in goal for the Camels.
