Women’s Basketball Drops Close Contest to #9 Babson

The Middlebury women's basketball team fell to 9th-ranked Babson 60-51 in the opening game of the Judy Pearson '85 Memorial Tournament. The Panthers will take on Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday at 12:00 p.m, while the Beavers face Endicott.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • With Babson holding a one-point edge, Alexa Mustafaj drained a three-pointer to give Middlebury a 10-8 lead with 3:16 left in the opening stanza.
  • Knotted at 10-10, the Panthers turned up the defense and ended the first quarter with a 4-0 spurt to take a 14-10 advantage after one quarter of action.
  • Middlebury continued to pull ahead, opening up a six-point lead (18-12) with 2:33 elapsed in the second quarter, following a jumpshot by Mustafaj.   
  • The Beavers closed the gap to 18-16 with 6:03 remaining in the half, but a 7-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Reagan McDonald gave the Panthers a 25-16 lead with 3:25 left on the clock.
  • Both teams traded baskets throughout the rest of the half, before a layup by Bethany Lucey gave Middlebury a 28-20 advantage heading into the locker room.
  • Babson opened the second half with a 5-0 burst in just 43 seconds, cutting the deficit to three (28-25).
  • The Beavers continued chipping into the lead, cutting the Middlebury advantage to one (38-37) with 2:36 to go.
  • Gabby Stuart put the Panthers back up by four with 1:37 to go, sinking a shot from beyond the arc.
  • Babson answered with a pair of charity tosses from Megan Bauman, leveling the score at 41-41 heading into the final stanza.
  • The Beavers grabbed their first lead since midway through the first quarter following a Kiara Simone-Davis three-pointer with 1:25 expired in the fourth quarter. 
  • With the score tied at 44-44, Babson rattled off eight unanswered points to take a 52-44 lead with just over five minutes remaining.
  • The Panthers responded with a 7-0 run capped by a layup from Mustafaj, cutting the deficit to one (52-51) with 3:28 left.
  • Babson was able to hold off the late Panther rally, converting four of four free throws for the 60-51 win.
NOTES
  • Mustafaj has scored 20 or more points in seven-straight games, and eight of ten this season, recording 23 in today's game.
  • McDonald has made at least one three in 19 of her last 23 games.
  • Tomorrow's contest against ECSU is the fourth meeting and the first since 2007-08, with the Warriors winning two of three.
