Middlebury Edged By ECSU In Double Overtime Thriller

The Middlebury women's basketball team battled back from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit, but Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) edged the Panthers 66-61 in a double-overtime thriller. The contest was the consolation game of the Judy Pearson '85 Memorial Tournament hosted by Babson.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The initial quarter featured five ties and five lead changes, as a driving layup from Middlebury's Alexa Mustafaj knotted the contest at 10-10 after first-quarter action.
  • The low-scoring second stanza saw ECSU grab a 17-14 advantage on a jumper by Anna Barry with 5:08 left before halftime.
  • A free throw from Bethany Lucey and a layup by Augusta Dixon drew the Panthers even at 17-17 heading into intermission.
  • Deadlocked at 19-19 early in the third quarter, the Warriors rattled off a 9-0 spurt covering 3:00 of action for a 28-19 lead on a three-point field goal by Danielle O'Brien.
  • Middlebury slowly chipped away at the deficit, cutting it to four (29-25) with two free throws by Claire Miller in the final seconds of the stanza.
  • ECSU opened the final quarter with a 12-4 run, taking a 41-29 lead on a Mariah Dunn basket with 5:43 remaining.
  • The Panthers battled all the way back, utilizing a 13-1 run to tie the contest. With nine seconds left in regulation, a three from Reagan McDonald knotted the game 42-42, forcing overtime.
  • The first extra session had seven lead changes, before a layup by Mustafaj with eight seconds left tied the contest at 53-53.
  • Following an ECSU turnover on its possession, the Panthers had a jumper from Miller just rim out to send the game to a second overtime.
  • A layup by Dunn gave the Warriors a 55-53 edge early in the second overtime session, before a free throw from Mustafaj leveled the game at 55-55 with 2:16 left.
  • ECSU tallied the next six points and seven of the ensuing 10 for a 62-57 lead on a layup by Julie Keckler with 39 seconds remaining.
  • A basket by McDonald drew the Panthers to within three (62-59), but the Warriors converted all four charity tosses to earn the 66-61 victory.
